Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat is a complex of temples in Cambodia and is the largest religious monument in the world. It was originally constructed as a Hindu site but since the 12th century it has slowly transformed into a Buddhist complex, built by many different kings over many different centuries.
The sun had yet to rise. It is 5am when my alarm sounds and we all slope out of bed as we know the taxi is waiting outside. Today is my birthday and the plan is to visit the temples at Angkor Wat on acid tabs. Five of us cram into a taxi so there are four of us squeezed into the back.
As soon as we are in the taxi we each take a tab of the acid. I rest the tab underneath my tongue, its tasteless. On the acid sheet itself it had a picture of the Hindu god of Shiva. This seems appropriate as we are visiting religious temples.
We arrive at a wooden gatehouse. This must be where we get our passes for the day so we pay the fee, I cant remember the exact price, and the guards give us a day pass. The pass had a photo of me on it and looked like the sort of thing one would receive at Disney World. There being so many temples on the site of Angkor Wat it is impossible to see them all in one day, we did not care, and we only wanted to see the most impressive temples, the most psychedelic ones.
We choose to the see the biggest and the grandest temple first. This particular temple was surrounded by a moat which was more like a lake and had big turrets that looked like upside down pineapples protruding from it. We knew if we got to that temple at dawn, the combination of the jungle, the lake, the sunrise, the temple and the acid would give a complete eye orgasm.
We got out of the taxi and walked up a path between the lakes to the main temple. The acid was definitely kicking in now. I couldn’t help but laugh and smile at the multitude of colours around us. It was a good idea to come this early, as there were not many tourists about; it felt like we had the temple all to ourselves.
Freddy at this point thought it would be funny to start making up words and coming up with funny phrases. We all agreed the word ‘balustrade’ was a particularly good one. Once in the main part of this temple there were Buddhist monks handing out red string bracelets, we got one each. They felt significant to this special day.
After parading ourselves around this temple, grinning in awe, we thought it best to get back in our waiting taxi to take us to the next big temple. In the taxi we were laughing like madmen trying to learn Cambodian with the driver whilst smoking cigarettes. It was hot, smokey and very intense.
At this next temple there were faces carved into the stone. To our delight the faces would change and move. What fascinated me the most was there were few ‘red ropes’ and you were free to touch and feel everything. We could even climb on the rocks by the sides of the temples.
At this time the sun was low in the sky, creating these incredible shadows. The others where trying to reach the top of a tower, leaving me on my own. I liked this. I pretended I was an explorer discovering these temples for the first time.
Back into the taxi once more and on to a new temple. By now we were laughing uncontrollably at nothing. The acid had really affected me positively; maybe because it was my birthday and due to all the beautiful surroundings meant it was impossible to have a bad trip.
This next temple was used in the Lara Croft movie. It is renown because there is a huge tree intertwined with the temple walls. We looked around and found a small hole in the side where we could sneak through and smoke a joint. We had each brought a small joint with us to further enhance the day, which it did. At this point while smoking my friends sang ‘happy birthday’ to me. I thought I would never ever have a birthday quite like this one again.
We stopped for lunch at a restaurant, situated close by. I didn’t eat too much; I wasn’t hungry so I ordered two beers. The beers felt good. I advised the others to get some and they did.
The rest of the day was spent in a similar fashion until we grew weary of this routine and decided to head back to our hotel. The main effects of the acid were coming to an end and we were ready to sit around and smoke and talk shit between ourselves in the comfort of our hotel room.
Once at the hotel we paid the driver giving him a healthy tip, as we knew how out of control we had been. He was pleased and we bid him farewell. Back in the room we discussed the beauty we had witnessed and how enlightened we now felt.
Taking acid tends to do this to people; when you have a good trip one can feel good for weeks after and when thinking of the trip smile and laugh. On the other hand if we were to have had a bad trip we would not be shinning right now we would not want speak about our day and feel bad about it for weeks after.
I felt the day could not of gone any better. It was my 20th birthday, I was with close friends, I saw unspeakable beauty and I got to hallucinate all day and laugh like a madman at nothing in particular.

Not to jump off topic... but, Cambodian peoples are a hard working dedicated group, that still knows how to unwind at the end of the day. I work with a lot of them and I am always humbled by the stories the older guys tell me about how shit hit the fan back in the 70's. One of my friends remembers it all, he and his family had to leave the country in the middle of the night when He was just a boy, like 6 or 7 years old because the Communists were taking everything and killing anyone who disagreed with the program, so to speak. He tells me they killed all the smart people first, the scientists the teachers, the philosophers, anyone who would stand up to the bullies had to go.

Luckily places like Wat survived.
