"Love Roses": Cocaine Pipes?

They cost less than two bucks and can be purchased at some local convenience stores -- glass pipes that critics say can be used to smoke crack cocaine or methamphetamine. As Nicole Pence reports, stores that sell the pipes may soon be the target of a boycott.

It's a pretty little rose, encased in a glass tube, and only costs the consumer about a dollar fifty at local gas stations.

But, Reverend Michael Latham, the leader of the local NAACP Chapter, says these "love roses" are littering our streets and damaging our community.

Rev. Michael Latham: "Take it out. Don't sell it. And, understand it's being used to for smoking crack cocaine. I think Fort Wayne has a real serious crack problem."

Latham is calling for a boycott of at least three gas stations in Fort Wayne after calling the owners to complain.

Rev. Michael Latham: "We are not going to tolerate it. That you don't have us come put gas in our cars, fill up on expansive gas and then you turn around and sell something to citizens who have that issue."

Nicole Pence/Indiana's NewsCenter: "Latham says any crack addict can walk into a gas station, put five dollars down, and everything he or she needs to smoke their drug. I walked into this gas station behind me and bought two "love roses". Even though these are not illegal, Latham argues the owners know exactly what they are selling and what the people on the streets are using them for."

Rev. Michael Latham: "Gas and other stuff. Not selling these won't hurt them financially."

Mark Souder/Congressman, 3rd District: "I support a boycott. That's voluntary consumer decision."

Co-Chair of the House Drug Policy Caucus, Souder thinks Latham's plan is a good one. The Congressman hopes to go one step further in the near future with a law banning hidden drug compartments, like these.

Mark Souder/Congressman, 3rd District: "I believe when something is used solely for illegal purposes, it should be illegal."

The local NAACP Chapter will meet Monday night to vote on the boycott.

Indiana’s NewsCenter was unable to get a comment from the owner of the gas station where we bought the "love roses."

Banning Cylindrical Objects Won't Stop People from Smoking Crack

You know those little roses that come in glass tubes? You can buy them at gas stations for a buck or two and then use them however you see fit. And, as luck would have it, some folks like to put crack in them and smoke it. It should therefore come as no surprise to find people calling for a ban on these so-called "love roses."

…Reverend Michael Latham, the leader of the local NAACP Chapter, says these "love roses" are littering our streets and damaging our community.

Rev. Michael Latham: "Take it out. Don't sell it. And, understand it's being used to for smoking crack cocaine. I think Fort Wayne has a real serious crack problem."

"love roses" on the evening news, for all the wrong reasons

No word yet on whether Latham plans to target larger crack paraphernalia outlets such as Home Depot™, or the not-so-subtly named Container Store™, which sells almost nothing that couldn't be used to consume or transport narcotics. Last time I went there, they didn’t even card me to make sure I'm over eighteen!

Inevitably, when the citizens of Ft. Wayne, Indiana endeavor to misdirect their concerns over the local drug problem, they've got a powerful ally in their congressman, drug war hall-of-shamer Mark Souder.

Mark Souder/Congressman, 3rd District: "I support a boycott. That's voluntary consumer decision."

Did Mark Souder just use the term "voluntary consumer decision"? Lucky me, I'd have bet anyone anything that we'd never hear those words leave his lips given his career-long commitment to jailing certain consumers for the voluntary decisions they make. Souder then proceeds to celebrate his sudden affinity for consumer choice by proposing a new law banning small containers:

Co-Chair of the House Drug Policy Caucus, Souder thinks Latham's plan is a good one. The Congressman hopes to go one step further in the near future with a law banning hidden drug compartments, like these.

Mark Souder/Congressman, 3rd District: "I believe when something is used solely for illegal purposes, it should be illegal."

Even if "love roses" were literally never used for anything other than smoking crack, their prohibition would still accomplish nothing absent the simultaneous prohibition of other popular crack accessories such as soda cans, cigarettes, and radio antennas. But I also don't see why these pretty little roses couldn't sometimes be used just to brighten someone's day.

Remind me to send Mark Souder a dozen "love roses" for Valentine's Day.

It is more than just buying a tube. You can't just smoke shit using what is basically a test tube. You need a straw to get it out, a lighter to light it with. Plus, people can still use anything to smoke the stuff.

Don't forget tin foil. We can't have people freebasing. And spoons. People cook too much H in them.

he's gonna be even more pissed when the ban goes through and his car antenna keeps disappearing

lmfao....come to think of it i habve never seen a news article on this before...what took them so long? my fav are the "glass pens" lol...

Don't forget to ban light bulbs--won't matter much anyway since we've already re-entered the Dark Ages...

Fillin up on expensive gas? the gas stations arent makin shit on gas this guy doesnt know shit about economics he acts like people actually buy these things for the flowers

Nah not true tho, Ive got those lil roses as a present before i thought it was cute. but also thought of rocks. still tho the thought that counts

The sad thing is that before the 60s drug use was normal. Then suddenly boom paradigm shift and we can't even get something from the pharmacy that will actually kill pain (ex codeine/apap like you can in europe) because it will be called dsb even if you are really in pain.

Cheap light bulbs will be banned in a few years anyway for energy efficiency reasons. I'd like to see them try to ban plastic water/soda containers because they can easily be used to smoke opium. Maybe then non-users would begin to see how the war on drugs is affecting their everyday life. Or maybe they'd mostly rally behind a law requiring every beverage to be sold in flexible pouches like Capri Sun and Gogurt...

please tell me people arent just finding this shit out! i know in my town in the kinda bad part of town there is a gas stations that has the "roses" and "chore boy" right by eachother!! they know what the fuck is going on

Yeah, this is pretty retarded, and would accomplish absolutely nothing. Actually, the "love roses" glass is very poor... I've used one once (smoking meth) and the glass was so thin it cracked after a few short uses. They are shit anyway. Let them waste their time.

The glass bulbs and stems sold as oil incense burners at grocery stores, gas stations, and smoke shops are much better. Still, once I learned to blow my own glass pipes, I've done it no other way. You can get glass tubing and a torch, or anything you need at Home Depot, Lowes, or Walmart. Like I said... they are wasting their time.
