Hi guys,

I am currently suffering a depressive episode and have been put on mirtazapine 15mg (Remeron/Avanza). It has very effective in treating my depression. However, its major side effect and the only one I am suffering is weight gain. I lost about 10kg just due to stress with this episode of depression. However, I have put on about 7kg since starting mirtazapine about 6 months ago. It seems the weight gain has stablised, however I would like to lose weight and it has always been a lot more difficult whilst on antidepressants. I put a lot of weight whilst on zoloft a few years ago and it was very difficult to lose.

I don't look fat, just a bit pudgier than I would like. Most of the weight gain is around my lower back (love handles) and a bit around my stomach and chest.

I go to the gym three times a week and have tried to eat a healthier and have been moderately successful. Whilst at the gym I do my weights routine and then about 20-25 minutes of cardio.

BTW, I'm male, 27 years old, 6'2 tall and weigh about 95-96kg. I'm reasonably strong and muscular, it is just been hidden a bit by fat at the moment.

Any advice welcome.

Welcome to my world :) I was on Lexapro for 3 years when I first started taking it I found the weight to be quite hard even though I was training 6 times a week and eating healthy. Then I quit training and put on 40 kilos. I never wanted to use the antidepressants as an excuse but fuck when they mellow you out binge eating some how seems appropriate as you're in this numb headspace so what difference does it even make. Am on Cymbalta now....still not training yet but getting told last week I have diabetes has scared me into trying to look after myself.
