Could anyone point me in the way of any studies, websites, or even anecdotal reports about any long term negative side effects fo psilocybin (shrooms) ? I have been unable to find any such in my research on the web, in fact not even the DEA website has anything bad to say about psilocybin. apparently the only thing you really have to worry about is getting a bad trip. Is it really that safe or am I just missing out on something?

Most if not all mushroom deaths and illnesses occur when the shrooms are misidentified in the field.
And this, as well, is quite a rare occasion.
The only long term negative effects I could imagine would be having an extremely strong trip, say a quarter of an ounce or more, and encountering some sort of spiritual awakening that causes difficulty in concentrating on the every day, average, mundane elements of society. Then again, the negativity of the above mentioned is a matter of opinion...
Perhaps if something extremely psychologically/physically shocking happened to you while on a heavy dose (or even a light dose for that matter) of mushrooms, for instance witnessing a best friend's death, being hit by a car, seeing hundreds of people die in a train wreck, etc, would cause much psychological trauma for weeks, months, possibly years to come. However, regardless of being under the influecne of any substance, these things would affect your psyche for some time.
So then, one could conclude that any long term negative effects of using Psilocybe Mushrooms is dependant on the users opinion. The former of my two suggestions is relative to the user's view of spirituality. The latter of the two is relative to weather the mushrooms cause the trauma, or simply amplify the trauma that is caused by life.
As for long term physical effects, I believe mnmguy covered it well. There has been recorded evidence of mushroom use for divination for the last 8,000 years. I wouldn't say that it is any more harmful than anything in an average person's diet.
Naturally, as with any psychedellic, one could assume that if one is predisposed to schizophrenic dissorders, or other mental illnesses, that those dissorders could arise during/after using mushrooms. This, again, is a rare occasion.
One can only assume, then, that the DEA maintains its strict Schedule 1 status in Psilocybin/Psilocin because they fear the knowledge that we have to recieve from it ;) .

Personally, I have used mushrooms many, many times without long term problems, and so have many of my friends. Psilocybin is chemically very close to DMT, an endogenous neurotransmitter, and may indeed convert to DMT in the brain. These naturally occurring tryptamines are considered to be exceptionally safe to use. Also, mushrooms have been used by indigenous cultures for 1000s of years and it is likely that if there were extreme negative long term effects that the natives would have caught on to this and stopped using mushrooms.
Exactly what I would have said. :)

i don't know mushies can make you a little stupid after a night of frying. once me & my buddy figured out that was the meaning of life anyways though, so now we embrace it instead of denying it. mushrooms definitely change "you".

Don't think you can only get hppd after chronic use of psychedelics. Some people get it after only one or two trips. Acid is usually the main culprit, but i've seen and heard almost as many people getting hppd after mushrooms. A friend of mine had a psychotic breakdown after eating a twenty of mushrooms and had to spend 1 month in a psych ward and 2 years in therapy. I think the best thing you can do is really research your stuff, watch the dose, and space out your trips. and of cource pay attention to set/setting
Purist Love...nice thread on the permanent changes after psychedelic use. couldn't have said it better myself. :)
(MGS)"For if these tragic 'HPPD' cases were to actually read the DSM-IV they would see that in order to even have the 'disorder' they would have to be in a position where the visual changes were preventing them from living a normal life. In short, if seeing tracers ain't keeping you from getting you job or life on you ain't got HPPD."
I'll fight this notion till the day i die.,lol i don't care what the fuck the DSM says..its like saying if you have cancer or hiv,but don't let it interfer with your life, you don't have the disease. obviously there is a spectrum to hppd, everyone is effected differently and experiences the intensity differently. Alright let me ask this: if you do have hppd symptoms but aren't bothered by it,what the hell is the disorder then? HPPD used to bother me tremendously and to the extent of not being able to fuction at school, work, being around family/friends. But after a couple years i began to get used to it and found ways of seeing past the visuals and dp/dr. Anxiety is what really pushes hppd and makes people think they are going crazy. All the pills and anit-psychotics they push to "cure" hppd, don't really cure it,but just takes the edge off the anxiety and this in turn lessens the reaction or thoughts associated with having hppd.In this sense i can see how they might infer that you don't really have hppd if you don't have high anxiety towards it. I think its a stretch though. There are people with very light symptoms who just totally freak out, and others with stronger, who are just like ehhh oh well. I don't think you can ignore all the symptoms of person #2 and say well you don't have hppd because your not going all crazy over it.

hahaha, I agree with you. i think meditation helps clear that quote up abit too. if you think they are poisonous, then be poisoned. if you think they are sacred and were put here by aliens to help expand our puny conscious minds, then live like a king!! dont let negative perceptions get in the way of mushroom tripping, you have to understand, its all in your head 8o

READY FOR A RAMBLE?? :D

"Also, mushrooms have been used by indigenous cultures for 1000s of years and it is likely that if there were extreme negative long term effects that the natives would have caught on to this and stopped using mushrooms."

or maybe their beleif in the mushroom lead them to beleive such things as HPPD to be a blessing or a state of being crossed between 2 worlds like i did before i heard the term hppd and used the term PERMAFRY, HPPD has been around much longer then most people realize, its been studied off and on under diff names since the 60's psychedelic wave produced many casulties, but it wasnt untill my associates and I, made stormloader and HPPDONLINE that any real awareness came to be, most people who loved psychedelics would rather stay in denial back then before openin their mind to it, many still beleive its all in the guys head etc. but ya, the cultures were cut off from society, when(as documented in LSD MY PROBLEM CHILD) the first white man, (an associate of hofmann) ate mushrooms outta the kindness of some woman in the tribe, this was in the early era of psychedelic research, and we didnt even study or discuss much with the tribe who took the mushrooms called somthing with a T, they beleived(since they didnt know how to read a bible) that mushrooms were sent from god to teach them what they couldent read etc, so when asking a HPPD'r if he was in that tribe about long term effects, itd prolly be said along the lines of enlightenment , or in heaven while on earth etc, again is why HPPD was being researched decades ago cause of learys faulty acid wave and many casultys sprung from it, since HPPD is rare, finnally enough of the population of new age societys were able to say what wasnt right when they ended up permafried and knew it to be a drug instead of god etc, dr abrahm(tho i dont respect him) started the research, make sence?

cause in the last decade of HPPD awareness LSD was the most commonly used psychedelic, now that the word is out to the net community about HPPD not being BS like many thought in the widespread community for years, has made it so HPPD is more commonly said in posts for people to read and understand their disorder. Mushrooms can cause HPPD just as easy as LSD-2cb, all psychedelics can cause hppd cause they play with the same Receptors mainly 5-ht for tryptamines and Adrenolin and 5-ht for PEA's, not 5-ht soley but psychedelic used receptors of 5-ht.

HPPD also dosent come from Chronic abuse, you can take LSD 10000000 times and not experience 1 symptom of HPPD, tho i know many people who have tried Psychedelic's once and have HPPD for 1-40 years. HPPD is extreamly rare, i got it on around my 25th dose of LSD 7 years ago, im a pro psychedelic typa person so i got off easy and have little problems with it anymore, i still have BLATENT Visual Patterning and colors blanketing my visual field as if i was coming off of say LSD, but i dont mind this for many reasons, the problem lyes with people who do psychedelics unaware of HPPD nor being well researched in the field of these psycho actives, and do it outta curiosity, not expecting what happens, friends were doin it or outta sheer boredom.. i know many who were in this class of user's when they tried the Psychoactive responsible for HPPD, these people do not have love for psychedelics, infact they speak out about how they ruined there lifes, and who could blame them considering a non druggie tries somthing for one reason or another and ends up experienceing effects untill a magic bullet is found or they die, never understanding the true beauty that lyes in psychedelics etc, they cant jsut accept the disorder and move on like many of us can, and thats the problem, if u are aware about HPPD and the hazard it can bring to your life and ingest psychedelics then ur researched and understand such things, this is why i refuse to let friends try a psychedelic who never have before even tho they are aware of psychedelics and jsut about everything about them spit into their ear from me, its just not worth the guilt.

_________
HPPD is very rare and will prolly only hit 1 outta 100000 psychedelic users, if ur an average individual who enjoys his mind as is and the hold on to reality your taking for granted, then dont do psychedelics, they are only for the psychonauts and researchers when it comes to illegal psychedelic use, and HPPD can hit at any time in ur usage history and future, id go into the science about that but it isnt proven so i wont speak that.

"Mushshrooms are the safest drug. Only way to get a negative effect is eating poisonous ones. "

for real strongley dissagree here, Mushrooms have caused many people i know mental problems, not just pre- problems it braught out but once u dive into the spiritul side of shrooms many take it to far, i got one whos friend self-commited for the same reasons i stoped useing mushrooms at high doses or without alc to calm the flow, cause me and him came to beleive seperetly we were Psychedelic messiahs in a way cause this is what this fungis we hold up so highly lead us to, beleive much of what we take from the experience, and what we experience down to having a great trip then doing somthing unmentionable like going to the bathroom and feeling as if we offended the ancient teacher in some way leading to a dark entity thrill ride with all our fears dished to us in 3-6hrs. now this isnt gonna happen to everyone but psychedelics are toxicly safe , not mentally.. not brain damage, but a new mind, i liked to call it evolution. then came the day years back where i left the spiritul psychedelic path in hopes for the sanity i was about to loose by my own free will, i think i learned/saw more then enough, and some of it was mentally tampered, meaning i took it the wrong way or i was just psychosised out cause that was all the path i was on came to in the end, except my creative mind and deep phylosophy we all gain from these substance's, and ive learned to know when to say quits with the ancient teachers mescalin psylocin and DMT, tho i still use them occasionally i do so with alc so i dont get locked in a thoughtloop, these 3 psychedelics are the only ones i ever experienced spiritulality off of, LSD was a self anylyzeing tool, i could look back and see how all the shit i learned on it came from my own mind, somthing i still cant do with the ancient teachers.

This post was not anti-psychedelic, more of a awareness to psychedelic users, HPPD is real, and so is drivein yourself crazy, mushroom in comparisent to LSD etc, in regards to causein HPPD is somtimes more likly to cause HPPD in some respects cause of 5-ht activity and the the mind trip that comes with mushrooms, i say this cause the Fungis HPPD'rs ussually have many mental problems that came with HPPD, emotional instability etc that isnt seen with most LSD users, but thats all my opinion from years of research, in the end, theirs no safe psychedelic when it comes to HPPD, so before you use one, try and have a good reason for it, cause u dont wana get bitten for curiosity and fun.

and remember, its goes the other way too, many have extream lifelong positive effects from the drugs, just look out for your mind

sorry for grammer and puncuation ;)

Prexisiting conditions

I have diabetes and mental issues my step brother slipped me some mushrooms in chocolate Sunday afternoon and it trashed me pretty good. It is now Wednesday night and I still am having trouble focusing. I am sleeping and am feeling depressed. No ups w/o downs yin and yang such like that. If your going to do them start slowly with a five or so liberty caps and find your tolerance level. I used to do them by the handfuls in my youth but this time it whacked me good. I build computers so I need my brains to work well. I already told my step brother he can take suction. Be careful people they open the mind but some things are best left ajar.

pretty much, a really bad trip can affect you quite a bit....

but so can a good trip, i remember hearing about a study where they gave a bunch of willing participants a pretty sizable dose of psilocybin and asked how it affected their lives after the trip... months later most of them considered it to be a very much positive experience in their lives and found themselves feeling happier and more fulfilled.

some people get a bit of nausea on the comeup.... if it happens, hold it back for as long as possible and then just puke, you will feel better after.... if your worried try drinking a little pepto beforehand to settle your stomach....

eat a light meal 3-4 hours beforehand, have fresh fruit for the trip.... I prefer citrus varieties.... oranges, pineapples, tangerines, maybe some grapes, strawberries, etc....

Fruit just makes a good snack food for tripping, highly flavorful, sweet, good for you, and nothing died to make it... im not vegetarian by any means, but meat products while tripping always just seem wrong....

You might hear about flashbacks, its related to PTSD, basically it can create such a powerful experience that it leaves an imprint in your brain that can be triggered later.... There are a couple of areas where i get trails at night, other than that it never happens..... not nearly as horrible as the media makes it out to be, and its not just like *wham!* and your tripping face without any drugs... Its much more subtle.... HPPD is kind of related, it happens more to people who eat heroic doses and take things a bit far a bit too much....

other than that, be safe, have a nice trip...
