i got my ticket today. i'm a little worried over my husband's excitement to see lady gaga.

my first time at lollapalooza was in 94; beastie boys, George Clinton, L7 and a whole lot more.

It was when Courtney love was assaulted by the guy in the crowd, I was feet away saw him grope her titties. LOL, she was irate and was going off on him on the stage like "what would Kurt think?!?!?! i thought NUTHING BITCH HES DEAD :/

doubt he cares about her music, she is a sexy woman and is highly sexualized, I'm sure it will be a visually entertaining show. =)

I REALLLLLY want to go to lollapalooza this year ,but i need to know if its a chill atmosphere. Ive only gone to shows/festivals in CA and OR where its been kosher to smoke a joint/blunt openly, standing in the crowd. would that fly in chicago?

The midwest scares me

Its a drunk atmosphere really, but I never once had a problem sparking up in the crowd or in one of the chillout areas in the park. I found people to generally be nice, but I also found that most people kept to themselves. Its not a hippie type event where anything goes (much like forest gatherings in CA or festivals like Coachella), but there is still a friendly atmosphere.

you are right. i still can't stand her tho.

anyone have suggestions on what areas to stay in?

What do you mean by that?

Being an EDM junkie I tended to stay at Perry's, but found myself seeing at least 2 acts (if not more) on every other stage. The event is very spread out musically (and literally, make sure you have at least 15 minutes between acts you wanna see to walk from one side of the park to the other) so I have a feeling you'll find yourself very spread out as well.

Make sure you endulge in the Sweet Leaf tea and deep dish pizza!

i meant hotel/neighborhood wise. i am not super concerned with being right near the park (too pricey), but i do not know chicago neighborhoods very well. or other things to check out while we are in town.

Ahh I see. I didnt find hotels to be that bad price wise (if you booked months in advance, i.e. now), and as long as you're within a 5-10 mile radius you'll be fine to even walk back to your hotel with no problems.

(Its absolutely amazing, after the fest the streets FLOOD with attendee's for miles and on every street imaginable. Its almost as fun as being at the festival itself!)

My friend booked the hotel last time, but I remember it being quite nice and not that expensive. Ill ask for the information to pass on in this thread to you.
(Although Chi-Town folk will have a better take on this than me as they're (semi)permanent residents there)

when i was looking, the hotels near by were upwards of $200. that adds up when you staying for 4 nights.

^Chicago has a couple of great hostels that are worth looking into. There's one that's right next to the park (which I'm sure will fill up fast) that's pretty cool, except it doesn't allow alcohol inside. They do have a good free breakfast, though, as well as a HUGE kitchen. There's another one in Lincoln Park (the Arlington House) that's pretty decent - it's not as good on amenities, but has a much better chance of a party happening in the lounge.

If I were you, a_c, I'd stay downtown. If you have the energy you can always venture outside of close proximity to Grant Park & come back. It's such a hassle to get out of downtown from Lollapalooza every day, especially if you stay to the very end of the night. I'm saying this as a person who travelled via the L, merely 3-6 stops from my apartment to Lolla for 3 years. Last year we stayed in a hotel downtown and it was a lot easier/more relaxing.

silverwheel: Are you talking about Congress Hotel? A LOT of people stay there during Lollapalooza because it's right across the street & it has a lot of rooms. I never wanted to worry about noise and dumb kids so we stayed at a more chill hotel. We stayed at Club Quarters on Adams Street which is roughly 6 blocks from the park. We really enjoyed our stay. Our room was small but totally classy. It was clean, the staff was nice, there was a FREE bottling water service (they provide the bottles & the cool water). Also, there were a lot of people of a similar demographic to us staying there as well & attending Lollapalooza. Anyway, I might end up back there again this year. :)

^nope, I'm speaking of the HI hostel, which is really close to the Congress. I imagine its no-booze policy would keep the riff-raff down to a minimum.

Staying downtown is easily the best way to go - you won't be wanting to travel far after the day is done.

Besides the fact that staying downtown is a hell of a lot easier, its so much more fun.

I remember we got in last year the day before the festival at around 9:30, and by the time we made it from the airport to the hotel it was around midnight. The only place that was open was a McDonalds (yuk).

We were starving after not eating basically all day (because United sucks arse and doesnt feed you) so we decided we'd eat there and that'd be our Micky D's for the year (funny thing, it actually was). Well we werent the only ones who needed food, the line was out the door, all festival goers.

To make the situation worse (better? ;)) there were only two people working the register, both fit the title of "Miss Ghetto Supreme". Well we ordered (scared shitless of getting yelled at) and sat down. Within 5 minutes the two ladies at the counter errupted in a shouting match with a customer "going all sorts of ghetto" on him. The entire place burst out in laughter (myself included) at the site of two ghetto looking girls (one with curlers in her hair) shouting at this probably drunk, skinny, festival goer over his order of french fries.

Ahhh the memories =D

Right now Club Quarters is $159/night for each night during Lollapalooza this year. It was around the same price when I booked in June last year. FWIW, I don't know if having other chill, festival-goers around you is important in a hotel stay but it's definitely a favorite hotel on the Lollapalooza message board. We ate at the really chill bar next door one day and got in conversations with other friendly festival attendees. :) The Congress Hotel rate is $144. That doesn't seem very expensive to me for being downtown, in a beautiful area, and really close to a lot of attractions.

I really don't know of many hotels outside the downtown area. I think it's difficult for them to attract enough people so many are turned into apartment buildings/condos. I mean, I'm sure there are awesome hotels in Bucktown, Uptown or Logan Square. Those are, personally, the neighborhoods I'd look in if I were getting a hotel away from downtown proper.
