Artificial Lighting Poses Health Risks, American Medical Association Asserts
Panel Concurs With UConn Researcher's Report On Adverse Effects, Possible Link To Cancer

The American Medical Association Wednesday adopted recommendations based on a report co-authored by a University of Connecticut researcher asserting that certain types of nighttime lighting can adversely affect health and may be linked to breast cancer and other medical conditions.
The AMA's house of delegates voted to adopt policies based on the report "Light Pollution: Adverse Health Effects of Nighttime Lighting," co-authored by Richard Stevens, an epidemiologist at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He was one of four writers.

absolutely

Personally I haven't been using Florescent lights as my primary lighting for sometime time now, the implications are many, serious, proven, and easily avoidable.

Here are some results from a quick search on the subject of previous studies and warnings:

•Fluorescent lighting enhances tumor formation (Wiskemann A., Sturm, E., Klehr, N.W., 1986 Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology)
•Fluorescent lighting contributes to agoraphobia (Hazell, J., Wilkins. A.J., Psychology & Medicine, 1990)
•Increase in breast cancer rates among night workers exposed to fluorescent light (O’Leary, et al American Journal of Epidemiology, 2006)
(Note: it is currently postulated that the distorted spectral distribution of fluorescent light disrupts the body’s circadian rhythms through melatonin suppression which causes hormonal shifts resulting in increases in breast cancer. )
•Circadian disruption caused by fluorescent light in the built environment contributes to breast cancer and endocrine disruption (Stevens, & Rea, Cancer Causes and Control, 2001)
•Fluorescent lighting caused increased stress in humans. (Basso, M.R. Jr., Journal of Neuroscience, 2001)

We continue to search for cures to common day problems, such as cancer, by producing more experimental chemicals and radioactive materials, rather then evaluating what there is that causes the actual damage, and it is far more then cigarettes and/or genetics. This single example of fluorescent lighting shows how easily our genetics and DNA can be manipulated, by something so simple it hardly seems worth acknowledging, and there is much more that we exist amongst causing similar harm; which for most seems not worth the benefit of spending a few extra dollars and doing more for ourselves, like changing a light bulb routinely.
