Hi all.

I'm being prescribed Valium 5mg for anxiety.
But I've heard that Librium might be better and safer.
Was told that it was less habit forming than Valium, and that you didn't develope that much tolerance either on Librium.

Not sure this is true of course, but any of you have any experience or knowlegde with Librium?
I know it's prescribed to help alcohol withdrawl.
But since it's a benzo, I guess it's also for anxiety.

Librium comes in 5, 10, 25 mg strengt.
What strengt is equal to 5mg Valium?

Do anyone of you out there use Librium for Anxiety?
Is it helpfull for anxiety?
If so, what dosage is used for anxiety?

I don't wanna change to Xanax, Ativan or Klonopin.
Heard to many horror stories about those.

But I've never heard about anyone taking Librium, even though it is a tranquilizer.
(I wonder why not)

So if anyone out there know anything at all about Librium, let me know :)

On a daily basis there's hardly a difference concerning addiction, I guess. In the end when you want to get off any BZD, you'll have to do it gradually.

Chlordiazepoxide is a prodrug and the actual substance having a much more pronounced effect is its main metabolite - nordazepam. If I were to switch to something, it'd be clorazepate rather than chlordiazepoxide, it's metabolised to nordazepam on a higher rate, and nordazepam lasts very long so you don't have to worry it doesn't hold you whole day. In my experience clorazepate felt better as a substitution to clonazepam than diazepam or chlordiazepoxide did (on equivalent doses of course).

^thats interesting. I might ask my doctor about the clorazepate, I am currently prescribed one milligram of clonazepam but I have a hard time sticking to that dose (and I'm currently fucked because of this problem).

To the OP, I don't think switching to an equivalent dosage of Librium would give you better results. IME diazepam is much more effective as an anxiolytic than chlordiazepoxide. In fact, I've never met anyone who's been prescribed the latter for anxiety. Only for Alchohol and occasionally for short acting benzodiazepine withdrawal. My subjective experience with Librium is that it has little anxiolytic properties and is basically just a sedative, but that's my Oppinion, and its based on only trying the substance a few times.

Is the diazepam not working?

Yes, the diazepam is still working. Well, as good as it can, since I've been on Valium for 15 years now.
I just thought that switching to Librium might be better for longterm use of benzos.
And that Librium might be easier to come off.

I recommend staying on Valium if it is working for you. Librium is the mildest benzo that I have ever tried. Why fix something that isn't broken?

You will develop a dependence on Valium and Librium, but never develop a tolerance as long as you do not abuse either one.

Maybe I better stay on Valium then.

Seems like very few, if any, people use Librium for anxiety.

yea and why switch from valium, to a weaker valium? 15 years?? sounds like you've got a good thing going with your doc. like was stated, "why fix something that isnt broken" that would be like asking to get put on codeine instead of vicodin. just taper on your own and save up your extra ones for rainy days or really shitty days. good luck! i am deep on the valium use, but nothing like that. i go through more than i should tho Lol plus i use klonopin, etizolam, and phenazepam. xanax is like the crack of benzos (for me) feels good but the crash has you acting like a crackhead, me anyways. Good luck man!

I agree.
Unless there is an underlying thing that is causing you to re-think your meds even though they still work after such a long time.
At the end of the day they would use diazepam to taper anyway(most of the time), so just stick to your dose and try forget about the thought pattern you are in, it isn't worth the worry/interest in something else that is unknown to you.

Thanks for your replies. Really appreciate it.
I don't plan to quit using Valium yet (maybe never).
I'm also on Prozac. I can't stand to live with anxiety and depression without medication.
I used to take Mogadon for sleep, but I quit them a while ago. Didn't want to use two benzos.

I don't take Valium in regular doses. I only take them as needed, and that can vary from 0 to 6 pills a day.
They're 5 mg pills, so I often need to take two at the same time.
