Lessons you've learned from psychedelics

I thought this might be a good idea for a post, as many of us see psychedelics as much more than a bunch of pretty colors and a case of the giggles. For some, psychedelics have proven to be profoundly spiritual, for others they have provided answers to some of lifes more difficult questions... Still others contend that they have been changed forever by a single night under the influence.
This is your chance to share with us your experiences, and maybe even teach the rest of the forum what the "right" reasons to chose to challenge our own minds with these chemicals are.
The floor is yours people, please step up to the microphone and speak clearly.

"[The feeling of doing DMT] is as though one had been struck by noetic lightning. The ordinary world is almost instantaneously replaced, not only with a hallucination, but a hallucination whose alien character is it's utter alienness. Nothing in this world can prepare one for the impressions that fill your mind when you enter the DMT sensorium."

Too much to list here, but some of the most important lessons I have learned, besides the simple existance of an awareness greater than myself, is........
  • Live in the 'here and now'
  • Be mindful
  • There are many realities beyond the one I presently hold to be true
  • Consciousness is unlimited
What seems like such simple thoughts will keep you on the right path.

* Relax. Achieve mental clarity. Meditation.
* Ego-removal. It is refreshing just to exist for a short time.
* Combat self-deceptions.
* Clarify important decisions.
* Gain psychological and social insights.
* Appreciate sex and music in new ways.
* Put life values into perspective.

I didn't necessarily learn all of these lessons through psychedelics, but rather confirmed them while under the influence, and enlightened my mind to thinking in new ways that has brought upon me a new train of thought.
  • Humble yourself, and you will learn wonders about yourself, and the world around you
  • Relax, don't try to solve too many dilemnas at once, and clarity will come to you in time.
  • Music can soothe the soul, and set the mind ablaze with wonder

That we are all part of the universe, and not as seperate from each other as we tend to think
That their are complex patterns in the seeming chaos
That what we think we know is really only what we believe, as a shift in our sensory perception can greatly alter it

What I have learnt from the few key entheogenic experiences has been so valuable to my personal evolution, so valuable...
My experiences with LSD and MDMA (if that what they were) have made me realise through terrifying, near-death initiation that fear is within the brain/ego, and directly influences the heart. This has been my most valuable lesson.
My few encounters with DMT have showed me that there is absolute truth in any shaman-based cultures' beliefs and also has showed me that awareness, attention, intention and single minded concentration and will are of great importance. I could type alot more, but i feel my artwork and their descriptions say enough.

I finaly learned that more is not always better.
I also learned that once you get the message, hang up the damn phone. i.e. drugs can only teach you so much.

I fully agree Bomb, For me these entheogens have to be used in a life-path following way.
If my life-path leads me to my next entheogen, and if my intuitional thinking leads me to agree I should venture out on an experience, I will take it, I just have to keep following this path with heart that I feel im on. I may never take another entheogen again...

Hmmm....some things I have gained from psychedelics:
-there is more out there than meets the eye.
-there is a symbiotic relationship between everyone and everything.
-you should question everything.
-our brains are infinitely complex.
-that reality is not as black and white as we might imagine.
-that we are only a speck of dust compared to the big picture.
-the simplest things sometimes are the most complex, and vice-versa.
-an understanding of the relationship between science and nature.
-an idea of where I personally fit into the big picture.
-and of course that I am invincible and have the ability to fly.

I think one of the most valuable lessons pyschedelics can teach is about yourself and the way you run your life. They give you perspective and insights which are not otherwise possible, they make you realise critisisms (and good things) in a instant, where people may have been telling you for years etc.
As well as:
- greater understanding of the universe
- enormous insights into the human mind
- greater understanding of time
- increased spiritual awareness
- to be more considerate of others
- i think psychedelics have really helped me appreciate life and other people alot more. I am not more at peace with myself.
But there's plenty of exploring left to do

I know this is only one case, but I draw the example of the honored Dr Hoffman, who was a devoted chemist, a man of science. Since his discovery of LSD he has become a spirirtualist, still working in science of course, but his mind has been opened.
I think thats what it is... an opening of the mind.

Hmm...
I dont want to sound like a dumbass but one thing i notice about almost all of the things we learn through psychadelics is that we probably would have learned it anyways.
I mean, come on

"Clarify important decisions." Neural_shock
And so on...
Dont you think that its not the lessons but the path to the lessons thats important with alot of psychadelics?
To clarify what i mean, dont you think all of these things are pretty obvious when you read it?
The interesting thing about these revelations in my opinion is the way everyone reaches them. They are not exactly unique, man has thought about these questions as long as man has been able to express their thoughts (i think). But i agree that psychadelic drugs are a good way to really understand the question, but maybe not realise all the answers to them (the questions). Im sorry if this makes no sense, but im not very good at writing in english and i hope some of you understand what im getting at...

I see your point, but nobody ever said that you had to take psychedelics to come to these realizations. Psychedelic experiences are just one of the ways to do this. Obviously you don't need to take psychedelics to realize the power of music, to clarify your descisions, or to realize there is more than meets the eye. However, for me personally, using psychedelics has infinitely increased the validity and profoundness of these statements. While these statements all made sense to me before; after using psychedelics I understood them on a much greater level that I probably would not have achieved without a little help from my friends.
These statements, at first might sound simple and unprofound but refer to another one the things on my list "the simplest things sometimes are the most complex, and vice-versa". Statements take on a whole new meaning after psychs.

I fully agree with TopRocka about psychedelics confirming certain wisdoms as opposed to "teaching" them to me.
For me, the single most enlightening realization/confirmation I have had as a result of psychedelic use is that I am not separate from others of from anything at all, and that all the divisions my mind creates are merely facades -- that there are no real boundaries between things/people.
Other realizations/confirmations:
-Death is not really "death" as I once thought of it -- there is no end (just as there is no end to anything, as all is infinite), there is only change.
-There is much more to the universe than I am aware of in my normal (sober, human) existance.
-People are so incredibly alike -- everyone has the same basic hopes and fears -- and this is perhaps just an extension of the fact that we are all one.
-Time does not exist in the sense that we think of it in everyday life -- it is a spatial dimension in reality.
-Reality is not what colour shirt I should wear tomorrow or how I will do on a test or how much money I should make -- this goes back to how much of the human world/conception is not real.
-Fundamental questions and realities cannot always be explained in terms of conventional logic - rather things simply exist and do not need further analysis and explanation. As God says to Moses - "I am that I am".

I learned a lot about who I am compared to who I pretend to be. It is hard to put into words, but I basically saw through all my bullshit. Any change in perspective will do that. Drugs are just the easiest way for me right now.

otur, if you would have thoroughly read my post, you would have seen that I said that I didn't solely learn what I listed through psychedelics:
I didn't necessarily learn all of these lessons through psychedelics, but rather confirmed them while under the influence, and enlightened my mind to thinking in new ways that has brought upon me a new train of thought.
Yes, I'm aware that music is beautiful, and that music can soothe the soul, but never had I seen as much beauty in music as I have under the influence of psychedelics. I find all types of music beautiful, entrancing and simply awe-inspiring sober, but when on psych's, it takes that amazement to another level, and made me appreciate that other level

Bruce Lee once said:
"Before I learned Kung Fu, a punch was just a punch. Now... I see clearly that a punch, is in fact, just a punch."
It's not so much that you learn something new, but rather understand what you already know on a deeper level.
I have always loved music... but after listening while on LSD it has now become a deeper, more intimate experience. It's no longer music... it's MUSIC.
or something like that.

I always used to hang out with my parents when i was on acid, and i learned that they dont have controll over you.. u can do whatever you want and they cannot restrict you..
after that ive always had a lot more freedom, because now i know i dont have to listen to them
