Legalization of Cannabis in California.

In California we are going to be voting on the legalization of cannabis in November. California was the first state to legalize medical cannabis and there is a chance that it will be the first state to legalize cannabis for recreational purposes. I signed the petition to get it on the ballot and I'm going to vote to get it legalized. I urge any Californian bluelighters to spread the word about this. California is in an economic crisis right now. We have about two options to get money. We can fire more teachers or we can tax cannabis. Education seems more important to me than some silly endless war on drugs. Cannabis will of course continue to be illegal under federal law but having it legal under state law is better than nothing. If Obabma won't prosecute medical cannabis I doubt he will prosecute legalized cannabis. What are you going to do?

Which sort of sucks, he mentioned that he inhaled...more then once. His "Drug Czar" or whatever they call the head of the White House ONDCP is strongly against legalization of cannabis.

I guess medical and recreational are two different things for them, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

On the bright side, if and when California legalizes, it will at least bring this whole thing to a stage that people WILL NOT be able to ignore, and that's better then nothing.

look up TAX CANNABIS 2010 if you want to learn more about this. the initiative that will be on the november ballot is called "The Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010". they cleverly and intentionally don't have the words legalize or marijuana in the name, but that's essentially the function it would serve.

the language puts weed at about the same legal status as alcohol:

Allows people 21 years old or older to possess, cultivate, or transport marijuana for personal use. Permits local governments to regulate and tax commercial production and sale of marijuana to people 21 years old or older. Prohibits people from possessing marijuana on school grounds, using it in public, smoking it while minors are present, or providing it to anyone under 21 years old. Maintains current prohibitions against driving while impaired.

i'll be voting in favor - prohibition has failed miserably, and california could use the tax revenue. maybe this will also keep more non-violent drug offenders out of jail, thus freeing up parts of our prison budget for more important things like education.

I hope that if this happens and he does try some shit, the supreme court smacks him down. This is clearly a states rights issue, he should have no say in it unless it is being sold across state lines.

Scanned the act and couldnt find any mention of what is happening to medicinal weed. Will it be taxed too? cause taxing medicine is fucked up

I don't think the compassionate use act or SB420 will be affected by this.

One disturbing trend I'm seeing is other cannabis users that are going to vote no on this because they feel that it has too much regulation written into it.

You know what? I want weed to flow as freely as dandelions as much as the next pothead but that's never going to fly. We need to take baby steps and show everyone that this can work and this is more than likely the best way. I think it's a shame we need to approach this issue with revenue being the main reason for regulating it but that's the issue right now, not pothead's "rights".

Even people that don't use need to understand that even if we didn't make ANY tax money from this we would be seriously undercutting the black market (that generates even more crime) and reducing usage amongst our teens.

It should be a very profitable tax revenue. Also, free up some money wasted on the war on drugs, reduce cartel profits and make prison space. It is win-win, the war on drugs is destabilizing Mexico while costing the American people trillions. Not to mention persecuting people for constitutionally protected acts. Yes, what you put in your body is protected, drug laws are based on flimsy loopholes.

I don't know why any one would use Obama and terror in the same phrase. He is the best hope for the end of the war on drugs. He doesn't support it and nether does his czar.

Yea, I kind of think Obama was just being a lemming when he said he's against recreational legalization. It looks like the biggest problem will be the new dipshit governor. I'm about to pass out. Anyone want to verify this information? I do remember being very disappointed by all the concessions in the proposition.
