Bush family follies: Bombshell book rips clan for sex, drugs
By Rosemary Herbert, Boston Herald
Tuesday, September 14, 2004

Laura Bush was a college co-ed who dealt the dope and smoked it. Her hubby, George W., hired some meatheads to threaten a former flame hoping to sell her sordid story. And the elder Bush, when vice president, hired an uneducated woman he shared the sheets with to be his assistant.

There are more hot allegations revealed in celeb biographer Kitty Kelley'sbook about the Bush clan, ``The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty'', released today.

The controversial best-selling author contends that first lady Laura Bush may have a sweet, sugary demeanor now, but she did a lot more than study in college. She was known as the ``go-to girl'' for dime bags of marijuana, Kelley writes.

``She not only smoked dope,'' public relations executive Robert Nash told Kelley. ``But she sold dope.''

Kelley writes that it was during the 1994 Texas gubernatorial campaign that one of George W. Bush's former flames prepared to sell her story.

``She claimed she got a visit from some men who made her realize it was better to turn tricks in Midland than to stop breathing,'' Austin political consultant Peck Young told Kelley.

While vice president, George H.W. Bush chose Jennifer Fitzgerald to be his executive assistant - despite the fact she had no college education. She also became his mistress, Kelley writes.

``Jennifer was a fact of life in George's life. Period. End of discussion,'' said Carol Taylor Gray, wife of White House Counsel C. Boyden Gray.

``I'm glad he had her in his life to bring him a little joy. . . . I know this is heresy to say because Barbara Bush is adored by this country and looks like such a sweet old grandmother, but the country doesn't know her like I do,'' Taylor Gray said. ``I don't think she has a good heart . . . she's not a nice woman. To dogs maybe, but not to people.''

The elder president also had a randy side. George H.W. Bush kept a three-foot-high anatomically correct male fertility statue in the Oval Office bathroom. The president kept a roll of toilet paper on the extended male organ.

``He liked to send young women into the bathroom and watch their reaction,'' Kelley wrote.

Kelley, 62, spent the past 3 years getting as close as she could to the Bush family, talking to those willing to talk and hunting for documents.

``I started out thinking that it was maybe `The Donna Reed Show' and maybe I ended up thinking it was `The Sopranos,' '' she told The Associated Press.

Kelley is widely known for her best-selling dirt dishers, notably ``Jackie Oh!'' and ``Nancy Reagan: The Unauthorized Biography.'' Many don't believe what she writes, and the Bush camp vehemently denies it.

``Kitty Kelley is a discredited purveyor of trash,'' Bush-Cheney campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt said yesterday. ``She smeared the Reagan family and now she is peddling garbage about the current first family.''

A key source, Sharon Bush, former wife of the president's brother Neil, has denied telling Kelley George W. Bush used cocaine at Camp David.

Kelley and Doubleday said they stand by her reporting.

I want to read that shit. Stuff like this doesnt make me hate a president though. I liked clinton as a president. I do illegal things but am still moral and intelligent. the only difference here is that i just dont like bush.

Who cares? First off, this author has no real evidence to back it up except word-of-mouth. Second, even if she did sell pot it doesn't matter: we're all young and stupid at one point. What if someone here becomes a high-ranked politician. Do you think that your drug use 30 years ago makes you unfit to be in a position of power? I sure as hell don't. Hell, Bill Gates has been arrested, Ted Kennedy killed a woman driving drunk, Tipper and Al Gore used to smoke bud and trip acid, Clinton smoked weed, JFK was on a shitload of drugs, and that was while he was president. If it has nothing to do with political record, a real crime (like rape or manslaughter...Kennedy is guilty of the latter) or policy, it doesn't matter. Using drugs and still being able to become a success makes you a better person, imo.

One day we'll find out one of our presidents was cooking crank in the Oval Office bathroom, and dishing it out to the staff.

Who cares?

I agree.

There are things I did just a year ago and I now consider them to be mistakes that I have learned and grown from. I haven't been alive for 30 years and I've already gone through countless changes in my life and most especially matured in the past 4 years as I've reached my 20's.

Not to mention that Laura Bush is not running for ANY political office anyways, and Laura Bush, not President Bush, was the primary focus of this article and the point of the thread.

My only problem would be if Laura Bush was still using and/or selling drugs and President Bush knew about it and ignored it while maintain anti-drug policies. Or moreso, if the President was using and/or selling drugs himself while maintaining anti-drug policies.

Personally, I think the author of this book is ridiculous. If they want to make a case against Bush to sway the election, then use some relevant information that reflects on his ability, rather inability to preform his job fairly and effectively in the interest of the American people. I want to hear about current issues, not ancient history.

And as for being interested in Laura Bush as a teenager or young adult, I really don't find anything interesting about it. Is it REALLY that suprising? All types of walks of life in America have used drugs at one point or another. Why should a woman who later married someone who much later got into politics be any different or special? Hey, guess what? I've smoked and sold marijuana, too. Was it really more exciting when she did it? Doubtful. I bet I smoked much better stuff than her, too. So screw her.

It's impossible to be smoking pot or doing cocaine while being president of the United States. Nobody here can even fathom how many things are happening at once, decisions to be made, etc...on a daily basis. And there's no REASON to do drugs when you have everything in the world at your fingertips. Plus the secret service watching you constantly. People do drugs because they have something missing in their lives. He quit drinking after a terrible hangover the night after his 40th birthday. Drugs aren't exactly a helpful thing when it comes to being successful...believe it or not, ask Sigmund Freud. Well, except maybe drinking occassionally or smoking cigarettes.

I don't know, JTMarlin, the secret service was known to escort Chip around to drug parties and look the other way... Now mind you this, Chip wasn't the president, but still first family.

Nixon was known to get plastered on b00ze. It's not impossible for these guys to get access to anything they want either, but I would expect them to be more of the pharm abusers than street drugs given their positions.

Yeah, but drunk presidents have usually been terrible. Except in moderation. Even being a pain killer addict would not allow you to handle to enormous duties required.

What was Kennedy's deal? He was using all sorts of prescription stuff while in office but I've never heard anything definitive. The only thing I've heard is he regularly had cortisone injections - I forget why, but cortisone shots aren't going to get you high.

And I was under the impression some of the drugs he was taking could really get your buzz on.

He might not have been president but Winston Churchill was a drunk! :D

Kennedy couldn't tie his own shoes. He was on pain killers, tranquilizers, amphetamines, cocaine, anti-biotics, steroids, and the list goes on and on and on. He was a very sick man, he was read his last rights 2 or 3 times in his life.

this was on tough crowd with colin quin..."would you trust someone named kitty"

i still believe it tho, what rich white business man wasn't blowing coke and smoking crack in the 1980's?

Rich white businessmen didn't smoke crack. They don't like the five minute high and prefer the smooth rush of powder. There were some that did freebase their coke on occasion in the early '80's, but I highly doubt it was an everyday thing because rich white dealers don't sell crack, whereas in the ghetto crack replaced powder. By crack I mean impure freebase. The same things will be said about all of us who become successful in the 2020's and 30's.

Believe it america, you too can be a drunk for 40 years and then become president.

You can be a bum who lived off of the women you married, never having a job, and run for president, also.
