I am a new member and I have been on Celexa for 10 years. I've been taking 2 years to slowly taper and now currently at 1.8mg. The long term use has obviously tipped the balance of my amino acids and I'm left with newfound OCD symptoms, anxiety and fearful thoughts and depression.

I only take 1.8mg celexa before bed, when i awake i pop in 225mg of tryptophan w/b6 to combat the depression. So far it is effective to a point and i'm working my way up as It gives me slight headaches and I'm waiting to be completely off celexa. Then I'll supplement twice daily.

In the meantime, i was hoping to try NAC for the OCD and kava kava for the anxiety and phobias. Can i take tryptophan, nac, and kava kava at the same time when i wake? Can kava kava be taken near my celexa considering I'm only at 1.8mg. I am presently battling lyme disease and i hope it won't interact with the alcohol in my tinctures as natural treatment.

Also i worry that i might get an adverse effect from kava and might need a benzo on hand... Would it cause damage to take one after the other if needed in an emergency? Thanks in advance.

Why are you coming off Celexa? OCD, anxiety, etc are what SSRIs are usually pretty effective at treating.

Kava kava is a sedative, like benzos are. You probably won't need a benzo.

Hi sekio, thanks for reply. Reason i am getting off is because they have only made things worse then better and the side effects are not worth it considering I still have symptoms while on them. I think my Lyme disease prevents the meds from working to its full potential. I would prefer to do naturals due to less side effects.

The extra fatigue, brain fog and water retention did not help. I realize that kava is a sedative, but the memory that comes to mind is the time I tried passionflower or valerian. Both have sedative properties but for some odd reason made me sleepy and out of it but my mind and anxious thoughts were still running. If that happens with kava, i want to be comfortable knowing i have a back up plan with my benzo, and i won't die from it!

Yes, you should be able to take a benzo if you need to.

I would prefer to do naturals due to less side effects.

Have you tried any other medications, or just Celexa? Antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs have come a long way in 10 years. Many of the "naturals" are simply ineffective for treating severe anxiety and depression, without careful adherence to lifestyle changes and counselling.

My history includes paxil, zoloft, prozac, wellbutrin, buspar, lexapro.. They were all terrible and celexa was most tolerable. Do you have experience with kava kava? If so, how did you like it?

I've had the dried root a few times. It's mildly relaxing and makes your mouth tingle, but is far from good-tasting. I'm sure if you made it into a milkshake or something it would be tolerable.
(I don't have many issues with anxiety though.)

There's studies availiable on PubMed suggest that kava, or the isolated kavalactones, are more effective than placebo for treating anxiety, so it's definitely worth a try. If you want to read more experiences I would reccomend you check out Erowid and their Experience sections.
