What is this wonder herb otherwise known as Kanna? Is it overhyped? That's how I felt when i ran out to try some Kava. Kava worked well for an hour but didn't take away all my symptoms and it didn't help with sleep and gave me this heavy chest feeling. I have tried Bacopa and didn't feel much either. Same goes for St. Johns Wort. I think Valerian and passion flower made me feel spacey and drowsy..almost like I'm drunk. I'm currently trying out Rhodiola but I think it gives me heart palps. I'm looking for something for my anxious depression and want to avoid being dependent or hooked on anything again. So onward and upwards....Kanna. So what is the consensus on these herbs? Which one worked best for you? I don't know how to do a poll so I'll just list them.

1. St.Johns Wort
2. Kava Kava
2. Theanine
3. Bacopa
3. Valerian
4. Passionflower
5. Kanna
6. Lemon balm
7. Sam-E
8. Rhodiola
9. Relora

Kava isn't good to take for very long, it puts a burden on the liver for sure. St Johns work is meh. Theanine actually works! Bacopa works but you have to dose 2-4 times what it says on the bottle IMO.

Valerian is hella weak. Passionflower is good but it has a U-shaped dose response curve, so it is anxiogenic if you take too much! Lemon balm may very knock you out. Kanna is good stuff, and there is also a new pharmaceutical-grade extract on the market now.

1. st johns wort did nothing for me but i didnt take it for months, most people seem to agree its not much better than placebo tho

2. kava is okay to have before a social situation but i didnt find it very helpful, although i didnt have a great source, dont mix it with alcohol i learnt the hard way

2. theanine is pretty good to have a feeling of calm for a few hours, it takes the edge of anxiety but isnt really strong per se

3. i tried bacopa for a while but didnt really notice a difference

3. valerian people take before bed to help sleep, dont know much about that one

4. havent tried passionflower

5. kanna was interesting in that it made colours brighter and had a feeling of general wellbeing but it didnt work most of the time but its important to get a good source for it

6. idk about lemon balm

7. im trying Sam-E now because ive read lots of good stuff about it but its been 3 days so ill report back if it does something

another thing i think worth trying is ashwagandha, its an ayurvedic herb which lessens the anxiety response and i found it helpful in a mild form of stress management
id recommend trying magnesium chelate for a couple weeks, morning and night and see if that helps with low mood/anxiety

Keep it coming guys!! I forgot to list Rhodiola! Will edit now. Heard of kratom but have read of the accounts of dependency on it.

Nicholai- Where can I order the pharmaceutical grade Kanna? Actually where do I order any good quality Kanna??

Mysterie- I did not have a good effect from Sam-e. I guess I didn't need the extra methylation. It made my ears ring and I was on edge. I hope it works better for you. I am taking ashwagandha at the moment but I don't think I'm at a high enough dose to feel anything significant. I'm taking 600mg.

I'll try to find you the one I found that's been studied, and thus be more reliable...but it's buried way the hell down on my facebook wall and I can't find it on google! So gimme a lil while on that one lol.

My other suggestion would be to do a search for nervine herbs, there are more than what you've listed so far. Also, there's a few new antidepressants out that aren't known to have withdrawal syndromes, such as agomelatine.

GL! I'll get back to you on this <3

Anything reliable for anxiety and depression will probably be habit forming.

Thanks Nicholai! I'll await the message.. in the meantime ill do more research on agomelatine.

Hammilton- That is unless we cycle it no? I would imagine if I took Kanna, I would do 5 days on and two days off or a month on and a week off.

I'm interested in Kanna as well,@Nicholai and Mysterie, please message me a a reliable vendor. With the plant, are you supposed to feel effects immediately or it needs to build up in your system in order to be felt??I hear great things and I bought the powder from different vendors but I never feel any affects. Please also advise on dosage.thanks

I'd be interested in trying out kanna too so if anyone could message me about this that would be great. THANKS!

Ok just a little update. I got my kanna in and started with half a pill which is 25mg at 8 pm last night. A short while after I notice lights are brighter but it doesn't do anything anxiety wise. If anything i feel a bit more jittery and sad. I start feeling a little spacey like my head is a helium balloon. I actually got tired at night on my own this time without needing melatonin. This could be a coincidence as I only slept 4 hours night before and I was super tired, but who knows really. But I woke up sorta startled this morning with my heart slightly pounding after 5 hours of sleep. I haven't woken up in an anxious state in quite a while so this is surprising to me. Is this normal? Do I stick it out? Also, has anyone taken kanna with a benzo?? Just in case I get into a bad state with Kanna.

I tried the pharmaceutical-grade extract of Kanna known as Zembrin a while back. There have been some studies that show its SSRI properties and its safety, but only a few. I think ultimately it made my depression worse, but offered some relief initially. I experienced the color enhancement and very slight opiate feeling the first time I tried a large dose, then I seemed to have developed a permanent resistance to it. Before I gave up on it, I experienced basically everything you described, including the morning anxiety.

I think SSRIs are known to often worsen the condition. I have tried all of the things you listed with the exception of Relora. Rhodiola worked the best for me. St. John's Wort worked as well, but had too many side effects, including increased anxiety. Gotu Kola is another good one.

OMG stupid stupid me. I never continued on with the kanna but I thought it would be a good idea to throw in a quarter of a pill of kava and see what happens for my benzo withdrawal. I completely regret it. I still haven't slept and there's this nervous energy running down my limbs and in my chest. The kava is 30% at 400mg.

I was doing so well on rhodiola and relora and I had to do this for myself!! WHY???? Usually I take a relora to calm down my adrenals if I get anxious but I'm too scared to take anything. I took the kava about 5 hours ago. Would it be okay to take a relora? Please help!!!
