LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Not only were the Bears involved in the Jay Cutler derby, but they won it.

The Bears pulled off a blockbuster trade Thursday, boldly acquiring Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler and a draft pick in exchange for a player and a package of draft picks. Details will be available shortly.

Cutler, 25, played his first three NFL seasons with the Broncos after arriving as the 11th overall pick in the 2006 draft. In his first full season as a starter in 2007, he completed 63.6 percent of his passes for 3,497 yards with 20 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and an 88.1 passer rating.

Cutler was voted to the Pro Bowl this in 2008 after connecting on 62.3 percent of his passes for 4,526 yards with 25 TDs, 18 interceptions and an 86.0 rating. By comparison, the Bears’ single-season record for passing yards is 3,838, set by Erik Kramer in 1995.

Cutler grew up as a Bears fan in Santa Claus, Ind., and will be reunited in Chicago with two former Vanderbilt teammates, wide receiver Earl Bennett and offensive tackle Chris Williams. Cutler thinks so much of Bennett that he returned to Vanderbilt to throw to the receiver during Bennett’s Pro Day workout a year ago.

Cutler apparently was upset when the Broncos fired head coach Mike Shanahan and even more angry when he found out that Shanahan’s replacement, Josh McDaniels, was attempting to trade for Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel.

The Redskins, Jets, Buccaneers and 49ers were believed to be the frontrunners in the Cutler derby, but it was the Bears who landed the promising young quarterback in what is undoubtedly the boldest move that Jerry Angelo has made since becoming general manager in 2001.

Bold move indeed. Cutler kind of seems like a whiner, but at this point, if he can bring the Bears some wins, I'm all for it.

Cutler can act like a stereotypical whining annoying QB but he has a rocket as an arm, and this is what the Bears need.

all along we have heard from Chicago the argument for their losing as "we just need a capable quarterback."

with a defense that is getting on the older side, they are going to need Cutler at his most capable.

it seems like Cutler is very happy with this trade, going to his childhood favorite team and reuniting with his Vanderbilt homies (lord knows there aren't a lot of them in the NFL :)). good for him, I want him to succeed.

This was a good move for the broncos but bad for cutler. The bears offense is embarrasing and cutler will suffer because of this. The broncos will look good though as cutler won't produce the same numbers which they will use to make them feel better. On another note they will eventually be good making the NFC north better cause god knows that division smokes cock.

now, i don't know as much about football as some of you folk, but isn't part of the reason the bears' offense sucked so bad because of a lack of a good QB? or are you referring more to the O-line and/or receivers/running backs?

Yeah obviously Kyle orton sucks, but they're receivers blow, they got a TE and a productive run game, but their air attack is notoriously bad. I mean the bears on that note wish they were the bills or some other garbage team, at least they have one good receiver.

Dudes the Bears are going to be alot better this year on the O. Cutler solves their Qb problem, they just signed OT Orlando Pace who should offer great protection for J.C (pancakes anyone?) and if they can add a decent possession receiver in the 2nd round of the draft to compliment Devin Hester they could be scary good. That is assuming that Forte doesn't have 2nd season slump, although he seems like a pretty solid 100 yards-a-game rusher.

I'm not a Bears fan but they might have enough to win the NFC north.

pace is over the hill, yes he is a big mamajama but he will get dominated. Devin hester is too short and will be exposed as he doesn't run crisp routes. Forte will be good but where did the run game take them last year? The bears will win the north as the rest of the division is garbage.

so no more hopes to see a turnoversaurus rex as a starter?

:D

sexy rexy was released right after season ended.

The vikings better grab Garcia if they have a hope this year now. They squeaked in last year with crappy qb's cuz GB wasn't clicking and only playing 3 quarters and the bears had no real qb.

This is a good move, he'll have as much chance of doing well at the Bears as in Denver, I couldnt really see him playing well with all the bullshit hanging around the Broncos if he'd have stayed.

I only quote myself cause now the vikings are screwed in thinking one of their qb's will match Cutler..........Garcia is now a Raider!!

And ya LL......WAY overpaid considering 2 years in and already primma donnaing

At this point they should release him and bring in Alex Smith. I think Smith has a more risk averse style of playing Quarterback that fits in better with the Bear's overall system. Cutler has a monster arm, but he's an average Quarterback even on a good day.

They have a new coach now though. He might play better with a new regime.

Replacing Jay Cutler for Alex Smith would be a huge risk for very little gain. At best, Smith is slightly better than Cutler and they win an extra game. At worst, the change destroys your offense's chemistry and a new quarterback goes through growing pains with a new team and can't match his old level of production.

Smith needs to go to the Cardinals.

Point taken, but I can't see a team like the Bears going for a west coast offense. Cutler throws way too many interceptions to take the Bears to the next level. Smith fits this team like a glove.
