I was a heroin addict and have been on methadone for most of my adult life. About 6 months ago I did a four wk course to get a cv done. At the end the tutor asked me if I would consider volunteering for her! I've been working since xmas now and while I don't currently get a wage after a period of time I will...if I'm worth it lol. My criminal record is not the best...31 convictions....but they saw past that. Sometimes voluntary work is the only way to get ur foot in the door. Thought I'd share that too show that sometimes in life we get thrown a lifeline & we need to grab it with both hands!

Good luck.

I have quite a few friends and acquaintances that are in a similar position to the one you describe. But, you are undervaluing yourself by thinking of your convictions. They mean absolutely nothing in terms of your "worth" in the job market.
