I was at Whole Foods Market yesterday to pickup a few health snacks and when the total came out to be $33, i thought they made a mistake. sure enuff when i checked the receipt everything added up. i was expecting it to be under $20. Why does health food have to cost so much? I ddidn't even buy any meats or fruits becuz i noticed the price were like double that of the vons or albertson's. i thought less processing means less manufacturing cost. I don't blame the american population for being overweight becuz they serve us junk food for less $$. Where do u guys buy your health food? online?

"well we can super size that for you for only a quarter! you get another 4 pounds of processed meat from left over cow parts and 3 potatos worth of fries. And how about an ice cold 40 gallon coke?"

See, we've been conditioned into thinking that food is cheap but it's not. Processed foods are full of junk that is cheap to produce and easy to mass market. Conventional fruit and veg is easy to farm because they just spray that shit with fertilizers and pesticides to make it resistant to everything, therefore allowing the farmer to grow more crop at less cost.

Quality food is expensive but worth it. And you dont eat as much of it. Also when you buy organic food you buy only what you need because you know that what you dont eat will just be wasted, therefore you are more selective in your choices.

I eat a ton of tofu and veggies...beans and rice. Tofu is really, really cheap. Much cheaper than meat. Beans are not expensive...the most expensive thing I buy is probably instant brown rice..which is a few bucks a box but I go through it pretty fast. I dont really buy organic or anything..there isnt even a whole foods where I live. I recomment shopping at a regular supermarket and just making healthy choices.

The trick with eating healthy is to buy raw ingredients and cook/prepare everything yourself.

Just buy organic foods from a farmers market or Safeway and buy meat from a butcher.

It's so much cheaper to cook for yourself.'

I find organic fruits/vegetables have a lot more taste than the mass produced.

^^^^Exactly. Also I agree with GaryGnu...go look around you I'm sure you'll find farmers markets, outdoor markets, etc. I buy my stuff from both the local grocery AND the weekend fruit/veggie market that is quite cheap, and very yummy. Take note I've shopped around and compared prices and I know where to get the best value for my money. A little effort now saves you a lot in the long run.

I guess my diet would probably be really expensive if I was spending on mostly organic produce, AND also purchasing the usual processed junk I used to consume in the past (soft drinks, high sugar fruit juices, refined sugar /flour foods, etc) But ever since I cut the bad stuff out, I don't find myself necessarily spending more than I used to now that I'm eating healthier. I've actually saved a few !

When there's a will, there's a way. Good luck.

farmer's markets are the cheapest place to get produce, eggs and dairy.
And like people said, avoid things that are processed, heavily advertised or have a lot of packaging--because you're paying for that stuff in addition to the food.
Another cheap place to get stuff is at ethnic markets, if there are any near you. Brand name soy sauce from a Chinese grocery will be literally half the price it is at whole foods. And you can buy lots of beans and grains at a latino store for really cheap. Indian stores sell crazy cheap spices and tons of kinds of lentils, etc.

I don't understand why people continue to say that healthy food is expensive. It's not.

Exotic healthy food is expensive :)
