My friend bought a small amount of a drug that he claims is speed. It is white powder with some tiny crystals, about the size of a large sugar crystal. I've been doing research to find out whether what he has is speed (amphetamine) or crystal meth (methamphetamine). Can someone help me out? The person he bought from swears it is speed, but it looks a lot like how meth is supposed to look.

Where are you from? Here in the US speed is methamphetamine and it would be rare to find regular amphetamine in powder form.
I can't accurately say from appearances alone, but that to me looks closer to finely crushed methamphetamine. There isn't much amphetamine base in the US to the best of my knowledge. Street grade amphetamine is mostly white/off-white and is also a bit moist and clumpy unless properly dried.

Unfortunately, we don't do any form of substance ID here.. so we can't really help you out with telling you what you have. Street drugs are like that... the shit could be anything, no matter how real it looks or not. That's why it's important to trust your sources.
