I could be wrong, but I feel like a vast majority of people on this board are not in frats/sororities. I hope to be proven wrong. I know I'm being close-minded, but in my humble experience, people that are more into "drug culture" are very "anti-establishment".

I will admit, before I joined, I thought fraternities were:

stupid
pointless
"buying" friends
conformist
and a host of other negative connotations.

But now I look back on the past 2 years and realize that joining a frat was the best decision I ever made. I understand how hollywood/television pokes fun at fraternity and sorority life, I expect that, we are an easy group to target.

That being said, I have a bunch of life-long friends that have gotten me through a bunch of shit I never would have been able to cope with.

So I'm just interested in asking if anyone else on this board is a member of any type of Greek community? Any other SAE's out there?

you could never ever get me to join one, but hey thats just my preference, its not my thing. Im more of the dirtbike, offroad, usually labeled "bro" type of guy. Im the total opposite of the typical american eagle, A&F frat dude. And my personal experiences with frat guys at SDSU and UofA really turned me off to them, i found them to be like a pack of wolfs. Im not saying you are in any way because i dont know you, just my experience.
But thats funny you mention SAE, one of my best friends was actually SAE up at Sonoma in northern Cali.

I was in a fraternity but ended up dropping it. I have a lot of bros from my hometown that are SAE's though. They just got kicked off campus at university of kentucky though...

Hah I think that's funny that you say that because all of the guys in my frat are "bros". A majority of us are really into extreme sports and that stuff, and clearly pot. I think you'd get laughed out of my house if you showed up in Abercrombie or American Eagle. Not that were that big of assholes, that's just not us.

The one redeeming quality I've heard about fraternities/sororities is that they do a lot of community outreach work.

Just out of curiosity, how many hours a week would one be expected to help out the community?

^There wasn't much community volunteering that I had to do in my experience. Lots of donations though... money money money.

With the exception of the Katrina crisis... we had "mandatory" community work we each had to give a certain amount of time towards, but during such times, helping people who just lost everything doesn't feel mandatory by any means.

There's not really much mandatory work. It works out being about the same as people who aren't in Greek life. Some guys help the community out a lot, and some guys do next to nothing. No different than real life.

I was in a fraternity. Some of the best times of my life. I suppose it depends on the house that you belong to, but mine was not like the preppy hollywood stereotype. I learned to grow weed and mushies at mine. Those were the days...

id gladly pay $6 a semester for each life long friend.

and abercrombie and american eagle are a joke.

PHI FUCKIN ALPHA BRO!

nah lol, i'm in phi kappa psi.

but yeah i really think fraternities are stupid. yeah you can make lifelong friends, but thank the circumstances by which you became associated with these people and the people themselves.

it's really no different than the friends you could find on a sports team, in school, at a summer camp. the fraternity itself just takes all the credit so as to keep it running as a business.

Dude those are the lamest stereotypes I've ever fuckin' heard. I have never once owned anything from Abercrombie and you must have pounded a full bottle of everclear if you think I'd go within 100 yards of an American Eagle store.

As for "paying" for friends, that's the dumbest shit I've ever heard. The money goes toward SOCIAL FUND which allows us to spend money on renting out bars, trips out of state, formals, and alcohol and drugs. Paying that money is no different then when a group of friends (not frat members) all pool money for a "slush fund" to buy alcohol on the weekends.

You don't need to be a dick just because frat life wasn't your thing. A lot of people benefit greatly from Greek life.

I'm not in a frat, but I have a few good friends who are fratboys. I wouldn't say it was paying for friends at all. I have met a few douche bags from their fraternities, but the vast majority of them have been good guys that I would have been friends with in the first place if I met them elsewhere.

its not the fact that everyone individually does the work. its the fact that these programs wouldnt be as effective or even implimented withouth greek life. most of the students running the programs are leaders and representers of their fraternity or sorority. and most organizations require members to uphold their stated civil dues or consequences such as fines or loss of reservations to a formal are enacted.

and at my school, where greek life occupys a large percentage of the student body, you can expect a huge fund raiser, or awareness program to be somewhere on campus nearly every day. without the greek life, most colleges wouldnt yield near as much outreach work as they do with them.

haha way to get all butt hurt. im pretty involved in greek life as well as other organizations at my school
and i was saying that even if i was paying for my friends, id gladly shell out a few bucks for each of them.

6x150 guys = 900 which are our dues per semester but hopefully my 4.0 will pull through and itll cut in half.

The saes here are a little too southern for me here. I wouldnt nessicarily describe my fraternity as bro either.
but needless to say i frat hard.

and yeah theres going to be the handful of douchebags in every fraternity but i have buddies that i belive are good guys in almost every one of them.

but frat life is completely my thing i was just too lazy to elaborate. my b!

rush fall 10! wooo
cant wait to see all the troubled pledges!

Yea my school is in Ohio but I hear Southern schools won't even let you rush SAE if you are from North of the Mason-Dixon line

I was not in a fraternity but I definitely considered it when I was attending the University of Michigan. I am taking a break from school right now, but I think I might join one when I start school again at Colorado State University. By the way, SAE is the most "popular" fraternity at the University of Michigan. They have the biggest house and lots of money. I have met some real cool brothers at several fraternities, typically the smaller ones, but have almost met a lot of douchebags.
