Is it just me, or has electronic music gone to shit since the 90s?

Has it or not? I think yes. To me, the 90s were the best decade for music. Not just EDM, but music in general. It's really gone downhill since then IMHO. There are some new interesting things happening, like dubstep, but overall it seems like there's a lot more bad music today. I hope the teens are better than this decade has been.

Agree? Disagree?

i could rant about this for ages. i fully agree, music has gone down the shitter. listen to UK's radio 1.... enough said

Dude at least you live in a country that has something like Radio 1. Try living in America where 95% of the population calls all EDM techno. You don't know how annoying that can be if you're into electronic music in a big way.

I'd say there is still good music around, I think it's more to do with us growing up. The 90's was when electronic music was born and "we" were young back then. So you know it feels special and all that...

Half of me agrees with the OP and the other half says "hell no"

I feel that certain types of music have gone in the shitter since the 90's/early 00's (e.g. trance and Industrial), but some genres have really grown into something great.

with streaming media, and mp3s its easier to be exposed to what u think is bad music. wasn't the same in the 90s.

but i disagree, i've heard a shit-ton of music 2000+ that id rate as "i wanna be buried/cremated with"

well the 90's certainly wasn't when electronic music was born, but i know what u mean about being young at a certain time and the music feeling special and all that.

I guess it depends on your musical landscape and where you take the music ship in the waters of creativity.

... gotta admit though, dubstep is beginning to rub good on me. I used to hate the wah wah wah, wah wah wah, and it drove me nuts but after spending a few hours around some dubstep kids and taking a good listen, yeah, I'm starting to dig that shit. Quite hypnotic.

mainstream hip hop is shit. real hip hop like gang starr and stuff like that is what its about. the stuff lil wayne and people like that are churning out absolutely does my fucking head in

however some of the drum & bass around now is awesome. the same with trance, although i prefer the classic trance stuff

actually thinking about it id say the only thing that does my head in is mainstream pop music, such as Mika, or stuff like dizzee rascal and other talentless bullshit

While I would tend to agree with the OP, I think that maybe we tend to really hold onto the sounds that we really love and never let them go. I don't think the music has gone to shit, per se, but it has evolved in a manner which I'm not particularly fond of.

in general, i'd have to agree.
i like lots of diff music, lots of "genres" and think if you look hard enough you can find good music from many decades. you can also find a whole lot of crap in any given decade. but yeah, so far this new century hasn't impressed me much musically.

I agree. Though I will freely admit that when looking for new music these days, I tend to look for the elements of the styles that I like in newer selections so I have that little bit to hold onto.

Since this is the Music & DJs forum, I love hard kicks and squelchy acid bass lines. :)

Other genres I tend to just find what I like as my tastes are all over the place musically.

I dont agree at all. I think its just got to the stage that its so easy to release stuff to so many people you gota wade through more shit. Its easier today for someone with talent to show it with the availabilty and price of production equipment its just that as usual for everyone with talanet there many more people who are in it for the wrong reasons and you gota plough through they're shit to find the good stuff. Also todays producers have easier acsess to old music and so have a greater wealth of knowledge to draw ideas from.

I think this decade compares well with the 90's certainly in EDM if not in all genres.

sup yoker! and i agree with your sentiments. :)

All you hafta do is listen to one of those 'best of the 90's' albums to get like 2 solid hours of crap that was played at kids parties like Gina G, however, it think it depends on the genre. Pop was definitely awful then, but is equally so now, dance etc however, was noteably better...

I don't mean prototypical electronic like Tangerine Dream et al. I am talking about movement from Acid House into distinct genres such Drum & Bass/Trance/Hardcore + rise of Goa Trance. Although, I guess to each his own.
