is cannabis more carcinogenic than tobacco?

yea, i heard it from those anti marijuana propaganda commercials, which probably isn't the best source but i don't see why it would have less you know?

i had also read a study that tracked occurances of cancer in marijuana smokers, cigarette smokers and both cigarette and marijuana smokers. this study i probably read about a year ago, but what it had said was that the subjects who smoked both marijuana and cigarettes had lesser occurances of cancer.

bongs are worse because of how much you take in and all that. weed has more tar but with the amount of shit the put in cigs to make em burn brighter and faster and all that shit i think weed aint as bad

I do not know the chemicals in Marijuana in terms of carcinogens, but I do know the facts about Cigarette smoke:

Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including ammonia (floor/toilet cleaner), arsenic (rat poison), formaldehyde (embalming fluid), and hydrogen cyanide (gas chamber poison).

[information taken from standonline.org]

Also, Marijuana does not have chemicals added to it as do cigarettes. So perhaps Tobacco itself has less carcinogens than marijuana, but in terms of processed cigarettes, I would assume cigarettes take the cake.

:D

Well, that would make sense considering a joint is probably as big as 5 cigerettes. Also, most people tend to not smoke a whole joint by themself, unless of course it is PB & J night (Personal Bowls and Joints)

striker: exactly. How many people smoke a pack a day? Now how many people smoke 4 joints to themselves a day? I'd say the number is drastically smaller. The tar is still bad for your lungs, but there are no additives, and if you only smoke on weekends and such, you're hardly doing worse to yourself than living in a big polluted city...

Yes marijuana has more carcinogens in it than tobacco. However, at least according to this site and others i have seen before, carcinogens aren't that big a deal for lung cancer. Apperently it's radioactive ions in the fertilizers used for tobacco that cause most of the lung cancer. Not that the carcinogens are good for you, but they pose less of a threat than the radioactive ions in tobacco.

You're kidding, right?

car·cin·o·gen ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kär-sn-jn, kärs-n-jn)
n.
A cancer-causing substance or agent.

Meaning, any substance which can cause cancer is a carcinogen. This is the first time I've heard this radioactive ions theory, but if they cause cancer, they are carcinogenic.

as far as i know, cannabis hasnt been conclusively linked to any cancers, but that may be due to lack of studies

Smoking anything can give you cancer.

Ciggarettes have alot more toxic additives, but modern marijuana is not the most natural of substances either. I've seen many conflicting studies (sorry dont have any links) and this thread has many conflicting viewpoints, the truth is that no-one knows exactly. If I was to hazard a guess from my understanding of the topic, I would say that the smoke is approximately the same in terms of unhealthiness, but more ciggarette smoke is inhaled making them more deadly over a longer time period.

let's face it, smoking anything isn't good for your lungs. the only way to get rid of the carcinogens from weed is to use a vape (which burns the thc alone, right? never used a proper one myself, only shitty lightbulb ones). joints and blunts (or if like me you roll spliffs) are harsher on your lungs than a cigarette for sure, of course depending how big you roll, how tight you pack and how much if any tobacco you put in...but who needs a pack of joints to get high? One joint with a half gram or so of good stuff, stoned for a fair while, I don't smoke more than two a day, most of the time just one. so really, while it's more carcinogenic (I'm not even sure if that's been entirely proven?) it doesn't matter because you don't smoke as many joints as smokers do cigarettes

there are studies all over the net about the safety of various smoking devices...there was a really good danish or swedish? one I found ages ago that was useful, but I couldn't find it in a quick search...if you're interested though, look around

WRONG- where did u here this from??????? Water is the best- it cools the smoke and filters at the same time..

carcinogen wise, marijuana has higher concentrations, but nowhere near twice as much as tobacco, especially if a bong or vaporizer is used. I think the tar content is still pretty high, though.
