Hey guys,
Someone very close to me has a problem with pills. Tramadol, oxy, percs and xanax to be exact. He keeps logs of how many pills he takes a day and of what type (so he knows if anyone has been stealing from him). Everyday he seems to switch what he's taking, as in one day he'll take some oxy, and the next he'll take some trams (he took 23 the other day). He's been doing this for about 5 or 6 years now, it hasn't alwayhs been this bad, in the past year its started to get out of control though.
I'm thinking about getting some of his family and friends together and telling them and asking if they can help, however I'm almost positive that he's doing something illegal. All of his pills come in the correct pill bottles, but from all different doctors, and I'm positive that insurance would not cover all of these narcotics so he has to be paying out of pocket for them.
Anyways, I heard somewhere once that insurance will drop you or raise your rates through the roof if you go in for rehab. Is there any truth to this?
He is also on permanent disability so he gets money from the state, can this be taken away?
I want to help him as much as I can, but I also don't want to hurt him. Thanks for any advice anyone can give.

Concerning insurance, if he is on permanent disability, then I am fairly certain that he is also on Medicaid. If so then insurance should not be a factor.

As far as how an intervention, and this is what it sounds like you are attempting, will affect him, well it's hard to say. Only you know him well enough to have an idea of how this would go down with him. I do applaud you on your concern for your friend as you are a good friend to care this much!

Actually if he's like the rest of us on SSD then he is probably on Medicare Part D to pay for Rx's. This is privatized and each plan varies but is all written through Medicare. He's more than likely doctor shopping and paying some docs with insurance and cash for the others if he's smart. Same for Rx's. If he gets caught he could face jail time for fraud and have to pay the money back plus possibly lose his benefits... :\

I'm the same way but i'm not on disability, but i would think not.

If he is gaming the system, he can most certainly lose any state benefits he has if he gets caught, as well as getting some jail time. There's no way insurance would be covering all of this stuff, and he's certainly going to different pharmacies (oxys and percocet contain the same drug, so no pharmacy would give him both, and it's highly unlikely they'd give him tramadol in combination with that). Some insurance companies will drop you or raise rates for a zillion different reasons, including rehab - I'm practically uninsurable because I was hospitalized for a psychiatric episode a couple years ago - but that's not always the case. Some companies prefer customers to go into rehab than face later, more expensive, hospital care.

Sorry about going AWOL on this conversation, didn't mean to post than ditch.
I did some research on my own and found out that the state will take away their benefits if they find this out, so I'm kind of constricted about what to do.
I'm thinking about perhaps talking to this persons doctors before hand, telling them what is going on and list all of the meds which that one doctor is giving them (the same doctor gives him the tramadol + oxy), and working something out with them, like how they will leave me a message saying what they prescribed him. I will than give him the pills he needs for the day, and if he has a reason to take the other things (headache, anxiety attack), I will slowly hand them out. But only a very slim amount.
I will have to talk to him about this first. Basically tell him that I know, and HOW I know, and tell him that if he doesn't agree to give me permission to talk to his doctors that I will tell the state what he is doing (which is something I don't think I will do however).

Is there anyway to edit my title so I can get other people to talk here?
I also want other peoples input on how to bring up this topic with him.

Why don't you just try minding your own bussiness? If your friend is an adult and competent its his bussiness if he wants to play docs and abuse drugs and the system..

I would kill someone if they called MY doctors and said anything.. that is his bussiness not yours.
