This post is intended to be part of a series of posts describing the overall effects of different drugs. While it is important that information be unbiased, note that these descriptions are based on my own experience and knowledge. Enjoy.

Mescaline
Other names/products and plants it is in:
Peyote cactus, San Pedro cactus, Peruvian torch cactus.
Overall rating: 7.5/10

Medical potential:
Mescaline as of yet has little known medical potential. However, it may be useful in treating some forms of depression, and possibly even cluster headaches. It is likely that mescaline had significantly more medical potential than is currently known, as very little is known about it in that area. Some people claim it to be quite healing when used in religious ceremonies. As a classical psychedelic, it may prove useful in certain areas of psychotherapy and may have some use as a tool for introspection.

Euphoric potential:
Among the classical psychedelics, mescaline is known for its especially joviality-related qualities and the fact that low doses only tend to produce good trips while high doses are usually not as debilitatingly negative as bad trips on strong psychedelics such as LSD. It can be a fairly euphoric drug. Though not as intense in its euphoria as drugs such as cocaine, it may be more spiritually deep in its way of delivering such euphoria during good and insight-producing trips. Mescaline is especially prominent in its ability to produce perceptions of, and emotional responses related to beauty. It produces highly colourful (albeit often comparatively simple) visual distortions. The experience is generally regarded as being pleasant and spiritual, and often quite valuable.

Spiritual potential:
Mescaline can be highly spiritual, and in such a manner highly rewarding as well. It is one of the better known classical psychedelics, and except in cases of severe long-lasting nausea, often produces fairly profound insights, spiritual and emotional changes, and has a tendency to be somewhat clear. Some, such as Aldous Huxley, have mentioned a form of profound perception of beauty and fact of existence of objects or other percepts and thoughts during the experience. One of the most spiritually altering ways in which mescaline acts can be the sheer perception of beauty and appreciation of one's existence and surroundings. This compound can also produce profound ideation and perception, even realization or by some standards delusion and hallucination, of "outer reality," other realms and "higher" realms at high doses. Additionally, mescaline is fairly well known for its tendency to induce feelings of connectedness and unity in or with the universe.

Dysphoric potential:
While not as severely traumatizing and likely to occur as with some of the stronger psychedelics, high doses of mescaline, particularly above 300mg and most especially above 800mg can produce bad experiences, including bad trips. These are sometimes life-changing but rarely life-ruining. Derealization and depression can occur from abnormal side-effects of high doses. Nevertheless, high doses can sometimes become profoundly unpleasant and dysphoric, even suddenly. While mescaline generally produces a positive experience, its potential for negative feelings is to be taken seriously. Lastly, the consumption of cacti that contain mescaline can produce nausea and even vomiting. Vomiting from the ingestion of these cacti, to some, is considered to be a customary part of the experience.

Danger and harm potential / safety:
Psychologically, high doses of mescaline can be traumatizing and lead to long-term harm, particularly in a person's outlook on life. Depression is perhaps not overwhelmingly uncommon, and can sometimes be long term. Bad trips are known to happen from its use. However, physically the drug is generally safe. Doses below 600mg and even 800mg are thought to have minimal impact on heart and organ health. However, dangerous and even lethal overdoses do occur at doses well above 800mg. Physically speaking, mescaline is likely to be more dangerous than LSD and psilocybin.

Addiction potential:
There have been cases of mescaline addiction. However, mescaline is generally not considered to be addictive, despite the often euphoric effects. It is not particularly dangerous in this sense, and should be rated / thought of more highly for it.

Closing comments:
Mescaline can be a fantastic drug when used responsibly. Use caution but have fun. You can grow from the experience. Very much so. Nevertheless, it is a serious drug.
By some standards, mescaline and cacti containing it are often regarded as being sacred and one of the better and more spiritually beneficial drugs out there.
