Inflexxion-Bluelight Harm Reduction Survey

Do you have experience in using different types of prescription pain medications?

Are you age 18 or older?

Researchers at Inflexxion, Inc. in collaboration with Bluelight.ru are conducting a survey to better understand your views of harm reduction, online drug forums, and experiences and beliefs about prescription pain medication use. This survey was developed by Inflexxion, Inc. and reviewed by Bluelight prior to its release. You will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey, which will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You must be 18 or older to participate and participation is voluntary.

So far Bluelight has done a great job with this survey: 100s of us have completed the survey. We still need a little bit more participation though before the survey can be closed.

The purpose of this research survey is to collect information from Bluelight forum participants to describe the population viewing and participating on the Bluelight forum,describe how this population uses the website, describe this population’s harm reduction (strategies that reduce negative consequences of drug use) views and similarly describe these for the population who use prescription opioids in ways other than prescribed. Results from the survey will be shared with Bluelight to better understand what information people are seeking from the website’s forum. Inflexxion will analyze the survey results to gain a better understanding of how to address harm reduction interventions or information sharing.

"Your questions will be forwarded confidentially to Dr. Emil Chiauzzi the research survey Principal Investigator" Who's this? And why the survey of purely users of this forum? Obviously using only users from one forum gives a type of control on the statistics that other multi-forum surveys don't, just wondering about what will be done with the data collected ... if its purely related to improving Bluelight or has a wider scope.

Hi DistyBoi... good questions, thanks for asking!

Emil Chiauzzi is the principal investigator of the study at Inflexxion. We have had a few email chats with Emil so we remain in close contact with him as the survey progresses. Basically, that line in the participant info let's you know that if you email their email address, your questions will be forwarded to the chief investigator, which I think is a good thing.

I think the answer to your second question is in the paragraph you have quoted from their participant information. I envisage the data will be used for academic publications which describe harm reduction views/practices of Bluelighters - and we have negotiated that these results will be made available to us in a timely way. We Bluelighters may learn a bit about ourselves from this survey which is a bit exciting!

As to why not recruit from multiple forums - I think all the other Inflexxion surveys did this. I'm not entirely sure why they chose this focus for this survey, but I do think it is useful to have this singular focus. For one thing, it made it easy to include questions about forum status (eg. greenlighter, bluelighter) which are different for individual forums. Inflexxion already have a strong relationship Bluelight and by focusing entirely on us, they can give back to us more meaningful results than if the survey crossed many different forums.

I'm very confident you can trust the people running these studies.

It is, of course, up to you whether you will complete this for Bluelight or not. If one were especially paranoid, they could throw in a few false tidbits of information to keep confidentiality in the event something went horribly wrong but, rest assured, I'm sure it wont.

Yes it is entirely voluntary - you don't have to do it, but it would just be a nice way of contributing to Bluelight without reaching into your own wallet and donating.

I'd prefer we didn't make up any information. Inflexxion are not monitoring IP addresses in this survey. For the ultra paranoid who may not believe this statement, you could complete the survey while using Tor, the anonymising browsing client... making it impossible for anyone to trace your IP. This would be a better option than making up data
