Cultural Cannibals and Keepin' It Deep present Bollywood Bhangra with special guest DJ Rekha from NYC's Basement Bhangra

DJ Rekha & DJ Kyle Long
Friday, November 19th 10pm-3am
Club Hyde - 20 W. Louisiana St. Downtown Indianapolis

Bollywood Bhangra has quickly established itself as one of the hottest parties in Indianapolis. Last month the event drew a record breaking crowd of 500 plus attendees to Meridian street's Club Hyde and the November 19th edition promises to be even bigger and better with the announcement that New York's legendary DJ Rekha will be joining DJ Kyle Long for a night of Indian dance beats.

Called the “Ambassador of Bhangra” by the New York Times and named one of the most influential South Asians by Newsweek, Rekha is among the first DJs to merge classic Bhangra and Bollywood sounds into the language of contemporary electronic dance music. Since establishing herself on the club scene with her inaugural event, Basement Bhangra at SOBs nightclub in 1997, Rekha has produced some of the longest running and most successful parties in New York including Bollywood Disco, Mutiny, and Beat Bazaar.

Versed in a broad cross-section of musical genres–from Bhangra to Dancehall to Hip Hop to Bollywood, Rekha has helped launch the careers of artists across the musical spectrum. DJ Rekha was the first to present the artists Punjabi MC, Tigerstyle, and M.I.A in the United States and was a key contributor to their early success in North America.

Rekha’s musical accomplishments include sound design for the TONY winning Broadway Show, "Bridge and Tunnel." as well as the Off-Broadway show, “Rafta Rafta.” She also served as Associate Producer for the NPR Radio Documentary, "A Feet in Two Worlds" and marked the ten-year anniversary of Basement Bhangra with the compilation, DJ Rekha presents Basement Bhangra, featuring an array of international stars including Wyclef Jean, Panjabi MC, Tigerstyle and Bikram Singh.

In 2009, Rekha was chosen by the State Department to visit India as a Cultural Ambassador to the U.S. Consulate for a three-week tour of India. More accolades followed later in the year when DJ Rekha was inducted into the New York City's Peoples Hall of Fame.

This past year was highlighted by two invitations to perform and appear at The White House with special praise at the end of the event, "I want to thank DJ Rekha who's been spinning a little East Room Bhangra for everybody mixing a hip-hop beat with the sounds of her heritage; making a uniquely American sound," President Obama said.
