Godamn!

I have been suffering for the past 48 hours with flu. Now I know I frequently celebrate the autoimmune-boosting benefits of cold showers, so don't think "Oh, well clearly they don't work" because not only have cold dousing/cold showers/hydrotherapy been scientifically proven to boost the immune system (through various operations, from thermogenesis to stimulating lymphocytes in the blood, which produce antibodies helping to stave off pathogenic illness) but for some reason, the past week I haven't been having cold showers and my diet went a bit crappy. I really don't know why I did that, and boy do I regret it now!
I can guarantee that if I hadn't been lazy with the diet and showers, then I wouldn't be posting this right now. All of my friends have been ill the past couple weeks and I managed to avoid up until I suddenly stopped the cold showers, got lazy with the diet and continued to share the bong with my ill mates.

So yeah...I thought this thread could be handy, seeing as it's coming up to winter months, for all those who might find themselves suffering soon. Let's compile a list of flu relief tips! I'll start:

  • Mix a shot of whiskey, lemon juice, honey and ginger in a mug, top up with water and heat it up. Excellent remedy for sore throats and congestion.
  • Mix 2 tablespoons of salt, 10 drops of Tea Tree Oil and a tablespoon of Vinegar in an amount of water that lends itself to creating a cloudy, non-transparent mixture and gargle. This aids the breaking up of mucous, and provides anti-bacterial, anti-septic relief from the pain of sore throats.
  • The juice of 1 whole organic fresh lemon mixed with a touch of warm water and consumed provides many benefits to those suffering from a cold.
  • Make a vegetable broth. Absolutely what you need if suffering from a cold. Sautee onions and butter and garlic, add veg/chicken stock ad loads of potato, sweet potato, lentils and other pulses, carrot and whatever else you want to chuck in there. Add LOADS of turmeric and various curry powders, these have excellent health benefits, especially turmeric.

If you have any smart wee tricks to provide relief from any of the symptoms of a cold, please chuck it in here!

Oh man, that sucks, getting the flu so early on in the season! I think ginger has antiviral properties. I like raw garlic and onions for infections too. I also like hot and spicy stuff like you mentioned with the broth. I think tumeric is an ifection fighter too. A simple and quick way to get the mucus flowing is to make a package of ramen noodles with as much crushed red pepper you can stand in it, although most ramen out there is loaded with the highly processed stuff. Horseradish and mustard are good too to get mucous moving and hacked up. Get your vitamin C in and try to relax and rest.

Two words: SLEEP and WATER

Also, whenever I get a cold I immediately and drastically increase my vitamin C intake via eating oranges and/or drinking freshly-squeezed orange juice. It makes me feel better within a few hours. It is probably mostly a placebo effect, and when I drink OJ it might have more to do with hydration than vitamin C. But hey, if it helps, don't question how or why! :)

I also get these capsules from the pharmacy which are garlic extract, horseradish extract and vitamin C all combined in to one capsule. It is one of my most reliable sickness remedies! For example, I recently had a really BAD cold, like the worst I have had in 3 or 4 years. Once the initial phase of the fever and serious yuckiness had subsided, I had this really persistent cough and runny nose that just would not clear up. It's been going for about 2 weeks now. The other day I got some of these garlic, horseradish and vit C capsules and have been taking them 3 times a day, and my symptoms have improved dramatically. Works every time :)

salt water! gargling and nasal irrigation are the best thing i know of for relieving sinus symptoms. otherwise, especially if it's the flu and i'm already laid out, a little pot always makes me feel a lot better as well.

Nothing to dehydrate you further. I know weed and alcohol may make you feel better but I think dehydrating yourself only prolongs the sore throat and congestion. Lots of sleep, stay hydrated (hot tea!), eat meals that have nutrients in them. I am not sure if this works for the flu, but I swear by those dissolving zinc tabs you can get over the counter at the drugstore when I have a cold. You dissolve one in your mouth every few hours and it helps boost your immune system. One good thing is that just by being sick you're boosting your immune system! Feel better hun! <3

Right... I think the lozenges/dissolving tablets say to take one about every 3 hours? I forget what it said on the bottle. But I hear you, and its good to be aware of.

When im ill with a Flu or a Cold.
I squeeze half a lemon into a lemsip drink, repeat morning and evening. works very well

Thanks for the replies y'all. Keep them coming as a point of reference in the future!
Cannabis is actually a great one for the flu, and to be honest, I dont know why I left out THE most potent flu relief drug around - Kratom.
Kratom is a plant/of natural derivation so it should be considered as such. Nothing takes away the flu more than a bit of Kratom (packed with health-boosting alkaloids and the psychoactive effects help so much).

darksidedsam, I've only bothered with Lemsip once but it didn't do much. Isn't it just paracetamol and some kind of decongestant in a hot sugarry drink? Don't get me wrong, sugar can sometimes help and as much as I detest the frequent consumption of sucrose, I do feel it has a time and a place on occasion.

^ Taking mega doses of Vitamin C once you're already sick is pointless as Vitamin C helps keep you healthy--Does nothing to get you healthy sooner. But, hey, if the placebo effect works for you, go for it. ;)

Stuffy Nose & Cough Any Advice for How 2 Get Better?

Hey so I've been sick for about 2 weeks now. It originally started off with a soar throat (day 1) which turned into a cough (I was coughing up yellow/green crap) & a stuffy nose (yellow snot coming out) (Day 2-7). Then around Day 7 or 8 the cough started getting better & I still had a stuffy nose just not as bad (i.e. no more yellow/green snot just see through mucus). Anyways since day 7-8 my symptoms have stayed the same.. I still have a runny nose & still have a cough (no more yellow snot just see through mucus & I occassionally cough up some flem but not that often). Anyways what's the best way to get better from this? I was hoping someone would have some advice on things to eat and drink that would help me get better?? Also, things 2 avoid eating/drinking?
I duno if this matters but I used to be heavy on the oxy's and now I'm on suboxone (been on subs for about 3-4 weeks)

Not sure if this is the right place, but I'm sick of this fucking cough & stuffy nose and don't got time to see the doctor so any advice would help!!!

Merged with "Immediate Flu Relief Tips".

Have a gander at the posts in here, lman.

Get some Eucalyptus Oil to douse a tissue with and take large nasal inhalations of. It's great for clearing the nostrils.
Steam your face, and add Eucalyptus oil to the water - boil the kettle and pour it in the sink then place a towel over your head and sit for 10 minutes inhaling.
Get some Covonia! You can get the one with DXM or the other one with guafanesin.
Codeine is touted as an effective cough suppressant.
Don't consume ANY dairy whatsoever. This increases mucous production.
Make a tea with honey, ginger, lemon, redbush and green tea - the honey will especially help. Take a teaspoon of it and mix in garlic if you can stomach it, otherwise mix in some ginger and let it slowly slip down your throat.
Drink plenty of water as your body is still trying to rid the infection.
Rest!

Do you smoke? DO NOT SMOKE ANYTHING if you do.

Hey thanks for the quick reply!! It's appreciated. All the tips in this thread seem great and applicable the only one i won't be able to utilize is the codeine seeing how I'm on subs and get tested every week for opiates.. but all the other advice seems great! thanks again
