Hallucinogenic plant joins list of banned substances in Ill. in new year

CHICAGO --
A law taking effect in Illinois on New Year's Day makes possession or sale of a plant called Salvia divinorum a felony.

The plant can cause hallucinations within seconds after it's smoked, licked or chewed. Violators will face legal consequences as harsh as those for heroin or LSD.

Some retailers say the change in the law has caused a spike in sales of the herb.

"People are stocking up because of the ban," said Sebastian Pogorzelski, co-owner of The Highway, a Chicago tobacco store. "They're saying, 'Wow, that's crazy, I'm going to come in and buy some more.'"

State Rep. Dennis Reboletti, R-Elmhurst, said legislation was needed because federal drug laws don't address the substance. Only a handful of states have adopted laws regulating it.

"We decided to move forward rather than waiting for someone to be killed because of it," Reboletti said.

But advocates say the plant should be available for religious or scientific use. It has been used in religious ceremonies by Mazatec Indians in the Oaxaca region of Mexico.

In Carbondale, Crystal Basler, owner of The Country Goddess, a religious-supplies store, said she has sold salvia in both leaf and extract form for about a year. Until recently, most purchasers were middle-aged adults rather than teenagers.

"Some people describe (the effect) as they get very relaxed, kind of like taking an anti-stress pill," Basler said. "The leaf is very, very mild. There's no reason to ever make the leaf illegal. A lot of women buy it for PMS depression."

The herb's long-term effects are still unknown, said Dr. Neil Farber, an associate professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin who has researched the herb.

But it can be as potent as LSD, causing visions and improved moods in some people, Farber said. It also can cause loss of balance and coordination, and alter perception.

I've never even heard of this Rep. Honestly, is Salvia such a fucking problem they need to ban it? I don't know anyone who has tried it once that has run back to try it again. Dennis Reboletti needs to find something else to raise a ruckus about...how about the public transit crisis in Chicago and the region that's been at a standstill for the last year? On second though, I guess banning a fucking plant is much more important than making sure people can get to work or school.

probably a rising rep. that was told about that one kid that killed himself on it.. now trying to raise the coattails to low level representative fame.

It doesn't make much sense for individual states to ban it.

He's probably running for re-election in 2008.

fuck man delaware now illinois? Did someone kill themself this time? I am hardcore addicted to shooting APAP. PLEaSE MAKE IT ILLEGAL I AM APPROACHING THE LD50!!!!!!!!! Fuck you america....ok put me on a terrorist list you are the one making salvia illegal.....dumb fucks. welcome to my world. louisiana has had it banned for a while. not that its my drug of choice or i care to do it. but it sucks to see more and mroe stuff becomeing illegal. hey i could care less if they completely made it illegal in all states just gotta make weed legal in all states lol. haha and i dont even like smoking

Stuff can get banned without research in this country.

Gotta love it.

If you read the original statements by the Rep. its really, really, really, bad.

[Salvia is a] "powerful psychoactive plant which in appearance looks like marijuana but has the psychoactive properties of LSD"....."It's important that we in the legislature are proactive in protecting our children from highly addictive substances" and "For a drug to be classified as a Schedule 1 substance signifies that it's a highly dangerous and potentially lethal drug for its user. Hopefully, the passage of my bill will bring attention to "Magic Mint" and help law enforcement combat the future rise of this drug."

Facts? Never! Pass the law!

So now they'll just go to a neighboring state to purchase some and create a black market for salvia.

Salvia isn't even addictive, I have read things that suggest it has anti addictive properties, and of itself it has negatively reinforcing effects, and a reverse tolerance, due to its kappa agonist effect (the negative reinforcement I mean)

Anyone know why salvia produces the reverse tolerance?
