After travelling through Europe for five months and seeing how vibrant the illegal/squat party scene is there, especially psy parties, I've begun to wonder why this is somehing I've never really encountered back home. I consider myself someone who's generally in the know about what deviant things the kids are doing, but a true illegal party is something that's eluded me.
Of course, America is quite strict about such things in comparison with Europe and electronic music and alternative culture are not as widely appreciated, which explains the lack. I'm sure they're happening still, but certainly not on the scale of Europe and certainly not like they used to be.
I was far too young to see the real flourishing of the rave scene in the '90s, so I'm curious to hear some accounts from American rave scene veterans as to the nature and scale of ILLEGAL parties back in the day. I'm equally curious to hear people's evaluation of the illegal scene today.
I'm looking forward to hearing some input.
Thanks.
