When news surfaced that Scott Disick, the father of Kourtney Kardashian's children, was in Costa Rica reportedly undergoing treatment for his hard-partying ways, iboga, an African plant used to treat addictions, was thrown into the spotlight. It's not the first time iboga has made headlines in relation to treating addicted stars, as it's rumored Charlie Sheen's ex, Brooke Mueller, as well as countless others who lack fame have tried it. As with magic mushrooms, peyote cactus and South America's ayahuasca, iboga -- which derives originally from Congo and Gabon -- could offer a way to treat addiction.

Iboga treatment centers operate outside of the conventional mainstream, and outside of the U.S., where both iboga and its derivative ibogaine are illegal to possess or use without a license. In most other countries around the world, iboga remains legal. Thus the vanguard observational work that is part of the activity of iboga addiction centers is not centered in the U.S., where new and more effective addiction treatments are badly needed to aid a growing population of addicts, specifically those on opiates.

Many doctors support treating addictions with iboga or its pure derivative ibogaine, claiming that in many cases it does cure. In reference to Brooke Mueller’s reported iboga treatment, Dr. Stephen Ross, director of NYU Langone's Center of Excellence on Addiction, said, "Ibogaine treats opiate withdrawal through a biological effect, and also induces a psycho-spiritual state or mystical state of consciousness…They may feel interconnected to a higher form of energy, their consciousness is part of a greater consciousness, and have a sense of sacredness, awe and reverence."

Best known by anthropologists for its central role in the culture of the Bwiti tribe of Gabon west-central Africa, the root bark of iboga, Tabernanthe iboga, is prepared and administered in a ritual setting. The ceremonial use of iboga among the Bwiti is a two-day ordeal, and the person who takes iboga undergoes a journey into the spirit world, experiencing encounters with deceased ancestors, lavish visions, extreme introspection, and strange, often frightening states of mind. At the end, the person who undergoes the iboga ritual generally feels strong, refreshed, washed clean of negative feelings and thoughts, and in some cases profoundly changed for life. For the Bwiti, the iboga ritual is an essential initiation into the mystic center of their culture.
This potent plant has made its way across the ocean, and now iboga addiction treatment centers operate in Mexico, Costa Rica and New Zealand. A quick Google search will get you to slick websites for numerous such centers. But these places are not employing the same tribal ritual by ordeal approach to this mysterious natural agent. Instead, they are treating patients with controlled doses of ibogaine, an alkaloid derived from the plant, which is a potent central nervous system stimulant. Ibogaine was first isolated from the root bark of the iboga plant in 1901, and was even sold as a “neuromuscular stimulant” and anti-depressant drug under the trade name Lambarene from 1939 to 1966. The drug was also tested experimentally in the late 1960’s in the U.S. to treat opiate addictions, with positive results.

One hypothesis of how iboga or ibogaine work is to “reset” levels of critically important neurotransmitters in the brain, notably serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin plays a key role in overall mood, and most anti-depressant drugs on the market are in some way designed to modify serotonin. Dopamine, on the other hand, is our major pleasure and satisfaction compound letting us know when we like or crave something. In addictions, these and other neurotransmitters are compromised. Resetting them would provide a potent tune-up to the entire central nervous system.
The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), is a leading research group conducting and monitoring scientific investigations into the use of psychedelics. Directed by Harvard-educated Dr. Rick Doblin, the group is assessing iboga addiction treatment. MAPS is noting positive results with opiate addicts in particular, citing reduced symptoms of withdrawal and reduced cravings.
An excellent source of information on this fascinating plant, its alkaloid ibogaine, and its use in therapy can be found here.
The psychoactive plant database Erowid also provides broad and diverse information.
Psychedelics as a class are finally getting the research attention they have long deserved, so we can better understand their applications for reducing stress and trauma, helping to curb addictions, and to provide other benefits to overall well-being and happiness.

I can't believe it, fox news got something right. Nice article. 8o

Surprising how decent and fair and balanced the article was.
This is, in my experience, a first for Faux News.

Ibogaine has enormous potential for not only addiction, but spiritual sickness in general. What most people don't realize is that Ibogaine itself is inherently anti addictive. It can stop almost any addiction, and not even a large dose is needed.

Two big problems are the war on drugs, and the fact that rehab is big business. There's still money that could be made in Ibogaine if someone isolated the anti addictive part of it and sold it as a pill or something.

I don't think it would work that way. The experience and the social/psycho-spiritual context is a part of the treatment as much as the drug itself. By itself, it's just another hallucinogen.

That's incorrect, actually. There's something different about ibogaine.

That doesn't matter, though, as far as US companies are concerned, because of its status in schedule one.

Do you have any studies which back that up?

It's like ketamine - it shows a ton of potential as a depression treatment, but that doesn't make an afternoon snorting K off your mates coffee table therapeutic. Ayahuasca is another one which is often pointed to as a psycho-spiritually transformative experience, yet I know plenty of addicts who've smoked DMT for a few hours, had a really cool trip, then gone straight back to packing the pipe with meth and puffing away on another binge. The chemical itself is not a panacea.

No one said anything about a panacea, and I'm not talking about smoking DMT. If you know anything about Ibogaine, then you know that not much is known about it.

Anyways, I'm not here to convince internet people about what it's capable of.

I agree. For such things to work it has to be accompanied by a genuine desire for change, at least.

LSD is another one. It's shown a lot of potential for treating alcoholism but I've seen severe alcoholics use it, enjoy the experience and then go back to drinking all day long

Have any of you actually taken ibogaine? There is no way to quantify what someone's "trip" will be like. Where I took it there were as many different types of experiences as there were people. But ALL of us had little to no WD symptoms. It was hard to know what we're after effects of the ibogain and what were slight WD. I can tell you that all of us were up, laughing, having fun, going to massages and movies THE NEXT DAY. It was a miracle, and I don't say that lightly and am NOT religious.
I liked the article too. They did leave out how big pharma dropped the patent process because they didn't see the long term profit. There is none. You take it once. Big pharma would have rather me been addicted to pills for the rest of my life.

Chemical slavery quoted by Tom Morello in the 90's guitar player from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. Harvard PHD predicted all of this big money pharma and making you theirs and owning you. Slash even wrote in his biography"There's no point in messing with dirty street dealers to buy heroin when I can walk in a docs office and get a massive oxy script just because he's Slash.
I'm a slave and am constantly looking for a cure for clonazepam withdrawal from a clinic doctor whom gave me 8mg's a day to deal with a funeral. From a walk in clinic. Not 1 warning sticker on the bottle especially"do not stop taking this medication immediately" or many more that should be on the bottle.
Here I am a slave 5yrs later. 5 dedicated attempts no stimulants, coffee, etc.that all increase anxiety. Tried all internet methods like titration, chamomile teas and others supposed to sooth. Weening half a pill off dose for 30 days then another step was hell cause your body has an amazing memory. After 42 days of insomnia with my eyes taped wide open and the thoughts from childhood and delusional ones I can't even describe. Muscles began to seize preventing me from walking. The central nervous system hell starts in the right leg sciatica to tail bone/right testicle then leaves and those barely tolerable indescribable pains. Then it stops there and moves to middle of spine(feels like I got stabbed with a fence post right thru the mid section) seems like it travelling out of cns making it's way to the final phase at the base of skull. Oh yeah crazy thoughts are still there there and if I get 2 hrs of sleep I'm lucky. This when I fall off the wagon. I just can't take it anymore. I've even at times wrapped my mid section with a wide tensor bandage like a girdle.
Now I'm using pregabelin but scared of the doses from my 30g bag. Made it 6 days so far with no sciatica or crazy thoughts or legs on fire. Just gotta make it around 90 days and cant do it. What king of dick bastard chemical engineer designs this shit?
Honestly what kind of drug withdrawals peak between the 20th to40th day in nervous system and last around 90 to episodes up to two yrs. Never thought anything of it cause they have a low street value. I beat an 80mgoxy/day withdrawl with one month of ten mg supply of diazepam10mg/2day and immodium.
Now I'm very intrigued about anyone else who's tried ibogaine or ibogain to detox demon drugs. The only chemical research site I use and trust is sold out. Figures!!!!! Probably bought all by pharma reps. Don't forget these docs meet with reps and if they script a curtain amount of specific drugs they get sweet percs like season tickets to local pro team, etc. With complete disregard of ure well being.
I know there is a cure out there. Such a struggle I completely hate klonopins and never crave them but just have to take them or I will die. Anyone else try this????
