Hi boys & girls!
Does anyone know what kind of place I can go to in Toronto, ON to get a free dog or puppy? Like a small kind one? I'm dying to get myself a little best friend. I already checked out the THS. They don't have anything appropriate for my lovely self, plus the fees they ask for are out of my reach, to be honest...
Hope this fits the guidelines... Help!

w00f!! %)

Idk about Canada, but I know most places here in the US want at least $200 even if it's a rescue or an animal shelter. And that's really cheap it's usually more, $200 is just the lowest I have seen. They have to cover medical expenses and whatnot, they don't just hand out animals that don't have their shots so it does cost a little. These places would not be able to operate unless they made a little bit of money, the adoption fees are what affords them food and supplies for the animals.

If you really want an animal but don't want to pay anything, try looking on Craigslist or some other local classifieds site. People will often give up their pets like if they are moving or having a stupid baby soon or something. Often times they don't want money in return, they just want to make sure the animal is going to a good home where it can get the love and care it needs.

One thing to think about though- if you can't afford a few hundred dollars for the adoption fee then maybe you shouldn't have a pet at the moment. I'm not sure how much they're charging but I'm sure they're not asking for thousands of dollars or anything. Pets are very expensive to own. Between food, vet bills, medications, tags/collars and leashes, toys, etc... it really adds up. Not saying it costs as much as raising a child or anything but it's not just some free thing to try out for a little while, it is a big financial responsibility to ensure that living creature has a good quality of life. I will not sit here and preach animal rights or anything cause I'm not that kind of guy, but I will say that as much as I have wanted a dog for years I only recently got one of my own a week ago now that I am finally stable and own a home.

Good luck in your search and if you do find a little four legger to take home I hope it works out well for you : )
Let us know what happens

Exactly, I understand that you love dogs and want to adopt one, but my dog costs me about 700$/year. If you can't afford the ~200$ it costs to adopt one at the Humane Society you can't afford a dog, period. Wait until you can afford one...

Dogs are sweet, don't adopt one only to abandon it later when you find out you don't have 300$ to spend on the vet.

nothing to say about Toronto, except I've been there and I liked it...but I have to agree with everything above about the cost of ownership. Even healthy, like Reckless said, food and extras add up, and food is a regular expense (at least it should be).

And don't fool yourself - it is a real commitment. (I'm not saying you don't realize that, there's nothing in your post to make me think that..) I'm just saying it because you do have to take care of the animal - let it get out, exercise it, train it, etc. It sounds like that's what you want, a companion, and in the best case, I've had dogs that were like siblings to me. I've also had dogs that required a hell of a lot of patience and time to deal with, socialize, train, and they still have their own idiosyncrasies.

But the relationship and love from a good dog is worth more than most people out there. All shapes and sizes and breeds. Doesn't matter. Dogs rock.

I've had pets before and I know how much they cost. My cat didn't cost me all that much, actually. But I thought by paying less for adoption fee, I'll have more to spend on it throughout the year. I never thought everything would be free.
I don't think that I'll have much more money in the future. I'm on disability and it seems like it won't get better. I'm constantly home and all alone.
I thought that instead of paying $300, $400 or more you guys would possibly know of someone or a place that gives them cheaper. So I guess I know my options already. Now I feel like you ganged up on me.

Don't feel like you were ganged up on you. Nobody was doing it to be mean or anything we were just concerned for the animal. Look at it from our point of view- someone on a drug forum randomly saying they want a dog but can't really afford it... Don't take offense to it nobody was trying to bash on you, nobody even used harsh language or an additude. As long as you know that you will in fact be able to afford it then it's your decision to make. I hope it works out for you and your new friend

If your disability is bad enough, you may qualify for a service dog. There are some agencies that enormous amounts but I do believe there are ones out there that donate them to the right people. My Mom had MS and really needed one but I could never get her to make any move to that end. I've seen them do wonders for some folks with companionship to general simple help around the house and when not working, they're are great trained pets. If that fits the bill??

It will be your best companion. Truly altruistic and will just be happy for you..

I'm sorry.
No, I'm not that bad off, but it looks like I won't get better either. A big dog would't be a fit for me too. I'd love a dachshund/chihuahua mix, or a pomeranian.
I'm just gonna have to wait it out and see.
