I was diagnosed with ADD (not ADHD) and rx'd Dexedrine (generic). I mainly need it for concentration at work, as I'm not in school anymore. I need to focus when many things are going on as I get forgetful and scatterbrained, and need motivation to do the boring single tasks as I tend to mentally drift off. My Dr rx'd me Dexedrine, and I pretty much don't feel a single bit of difference beyond the first day or two. Maybe a slight feeling of calm, which really doesn't help my focusing issues. If anything it seems to take away from my usually positive, happy personality. I just feel kinda dulled down now. Otherwise I don't have any other side effects. I still eat just fine and sleep just fine.

From reading about symptoms and possible effects of the different ADD meds, I think adderall might work better, as many patients seem to experience more of a "kick in the pants" from it, which is what I feel I need, and is the opposite of what Dexedrine is doing to me (dulling me down).

I realize that my Dr is smarter than I am, which is why he is the doc, but I know there is protocol they follow when trying to see which med works. Would a larger dose of Dexedrine actually do something for me or just dull me down more?
Or, if more Dex isnt likely to help, how can I get my Dr to rx Adderall instead of Dexedrine? I am leery of just coming out and asking for it, as I want to solve my issue and don't want to seem pushy or risk him thinking I want to use it for recreational purposes. I really have too many things to do @ work and @ home to be doped up.

Any advice?

as a general rule of thumb most General Practitioners are taught that when a patient straight-up asks for an increase of and/or switch of a narcotic dosage Rx, they recall the entire Rx.
this is just my experience, plus my mother's brother is a GP. go about this carefully, perhaps develop a rapport with you specific doctor before 'suggesting' an alteration to your prescription, have a well-balanced and neutral discussion. that is all i can offer, as Adderall is not available where I live (UK).

but as you said, doctors do tend to know whats safe.

I'm seeing a psychiatrist, my GP referred me to him when I was asked about how to improve my focus and work performance.

Ive tried Ritalin (some nausea, zero positive effect), Concerta (some nausea, some extra alertness but no real focus effect), and now dexadrine (no nausea, personality feels dulled, no real focus effect). Wouldn't adderall be the next step anyway?

Dexedrine and adderall are almost the same drug ! The only difference is that adderall contains levo-amphetamine (which is less active than dextro-amphetamine) while dexedrine doesn't. Switching to adderall wouldn't make sense and would most likely prove useless.

Such questions are not allowed by the way.
