Mental Health How to convince your shrink that you have adhd

Assuming you do have ADHD/ADD, your doctor will be willing to evaluate you, unless you already suffer from A psychosis related disorder. Why? Because of the risk of 'stimulant psychosis'. During the time of risperidone I was taking, my weight went dramatically up, which made me ask my psych for appetite suppressant. He said no way, you know why.

There is also some data out there showing an increased risk of stimulant psychosis for people treated with ADHD medication. Look it up.

I know several people who said that they are doing poorly in school and want to be prescribed Adderall so they can be more focused and study more. The "adults" ask for Strattera since that is prescribed for "adult ADHD."

If you have to "convince" your shrink that you have ADD, you very well might not. Because it is something that is only diagnosed through anecdotal evidence shrinks are very experienced in adults coming in with a laundry list of "symptoms" and asking to be put on stimulants. Since there are an overwhelming number of shrinks that see their profession as nothing more than pharmaceutical gateways, people usually find what they are looking for. I hope you will consider the long term effects on your emotional and physical health, (in short, your life and how you deal with it), over the short term effects of taking stimulants for enhanced focus and productivity. Good luck.

you have to be honest with your doctor. why try to convince them if you have a legitimate issue? so you can get medication? since this is a "what should i say to my doctor" thread i'm going to close this, as this is not allowed.

be upfront and honest with your doctor if you really think that you have adhd.
