I drink 2 bottles of liquor a week lately. Is this harmful short term?

Its not like anyone in my life knows. Its not obvious. I only drink on weekends or after work (alone). I work 60 hrs a week in a factory so I do it to unwind. I function in my life just fine.

But seeing as I'm only in my 20s (however, I feel like an old man inside) ...I wonder if this does any harm to my body.
Or if its just bad in general. Idk. Or how to stop. Or if anyone has drank that often for how long & if they're fine physically & mentally now.

Thanks.

*What do you drink? What size are these 'bottles'? Any background information that would be helpful for responses (what exactly do you need to 'unwind' from!? Lots of people work, but not everyone drinks 2 bottles a week), etc.

I'm in my 20's also (25, will be 26 later this year) and between age 20-22 I drank just about as much as you say you do -- assuming we are talking about the same amount (in reference to 'bottles', how big is a bottle!?). I did this for coping reasons as well: you say to 'unwind' and mine was to 'forget'. It doesn't really matter what the reason is - as I don't think there is any reason to justify (or, to make it 'not matter') drinking that much alcohol in a week -- yes there are many many people who drink a lot more than that, but that is beside the point, too.

I could rant for a while so I'll to bee brief. You're correct in having a hunch that it may not be a good thing. If you didn't have ths idea, the question wouldn't have been posed. Also, you seem to be making it a point to hide this from others. You do it on weekends, and sometimes alone - you said your family and friends are not aware of the extent to which you drink. Why is this? Are you ashamed? Do you think you know what they'd say/how they'd react/what would be suggested, etc?

You need to find another way to unwind. Are you physically exhausted? If not, can you exercise? I'd try to exercise every weekend while tapering on your alcohol intake. It's best to deal with this potential problem NOW while you're young and at this point (rather than 2 'bottles' a day) than later on when it's clear to everyone you have a problem, and you're too messed up to realize it (and worse, to deal with it and get well). If you need a little help, maybe you could see a psychologist - is this an option for you? I'm not saying you need medication (psychiatrist) but rather some cognitive therapy to deal with the root issues while tapering, or to have someone else to work out a tapering plan or plan of action with.

Exercise works wonders (in SO many ways), make sure to eat well so your body can function and your mind is (in turn) 'fresh', get 7 hours of sleep (more/less), and make sure to not be a hermit! I know that if you're working or taking courses (whatever it may be) during the week, you can become exhausted by the time Friday rolls around, but make sure you don't become too isolated. It's important to have people you can talk to, or even just be around, if need be. Check out this text for some (LOTS of) information:

Hi ZAP <3
2 bottles of liquor per week is a fairly large amount (assuming you mean a total of approximately 1.5 quarts?). Short-term I would be concerned about its affects on your liver and stomach etc, but mid to long-term I'm more concerned about the potential for you to become addicted. I know you've had substance issues in the past and alcohol can be really really deceptively easy to become addicted to. It seems like you are already aware of that anyway so if you can, perhaps try to cut down your alcohol intake NOW. It could be a good test to see if you can indeed function just fine without alcohol, or not. Or perhaps even try to have a few days off right now, as of today, and see how you feel.

If you find that you're craving a drink or suffering any withdrawal symptoms e.g. shaky hands, sweating, irritability, mood swings, difficulty sleeping etc., then the alarm bells should be ringing and you should stop drinking altogether. I've been addicted to alcohol for about 5 years now and I had no idea I was addicted until it was much MUCH too late.

i would say you are abusing yourself with that much.

some are physically predisposed to alcohol doing more damage than others, so for each individual its hard to say; a short-term with alcohol is always up in the air.

but thats a lot more then average, and in the long run would definitely catch up to you, if you were able to keep it to at least that amount.

I asked cuz it doesn't seem like much to me, honestly.
By bottles I mean uh...the cheap shit that's 20%.idk how big they are in mL. Not the super small ones, but the midsize. Hell if I know.
I work in a metals factory so its heavy work and insane hours, plus I bike to work in lieu of a car cuz mine broke down. I'm sore, and alcohol helps.
I rarely get drunk. I just get buzzed, most of the time.
Maybe it doesn't seem like a lot to me cuz I have a slight tolerance..or cuz I've always held my liquor well. Idk.
And the reason no one knows is that I don't think its anybody's business cuz they'd obviously frown upon it. I drink alone cuz I have no social life with my job.

Ohio factory workers have moral issues with drinking after work? That doesn't sound anything like factory workers I've met, and worked with in the past. Most either drink, get high, or both.

To answer your question, I don't consider approx. 50oz of 20% alcohol per week to be overly excessive for a younger person. That's the equiv. of about 4x 1oz spirit drinks for every 24hr period.

Most people I work with drink, if not get high as well. I just wondered if its a damage to my body. I use drugs...massive amounts of caffeine and I'm prescribed adderall & occasionally otgher shit...all of which are probably less harmful.

you want it to be too much? you idolize a certain stock of real man that drinks too much after work? imagine that is the mold into which you best fit?

^um no. I don't idolize anyone nor do I get off on portraying that image. I keep it to myself for christs sake. I only wondered if statistically it was harmful.

i get what shes saying...
but i know such things arent of much relevance to you ZAP...

20%,,, thats different, i was imagining 40% 80proof 750ml bottles.
some 40proof, 2 750ml worth, is enough to develop an addiction, mess with your glucose & enzymes etc.
im guessing thats less then 6 12oz beers a night... 2 nice pints of Ale, or a glass or two of decent Red Wine is much better then an apple a day... keeping at that is something im not going to try.

risks>benefits

but in every 1-2oz's of that liquor is at least a full glass of wines worth of sugar, seeing all that in a wine glass is pretty stomach churning.
idk
the fact you have enough consideration for yourself to ask, leads me to believe you would have enough to know when it is indeed too much. try and keep yourself in check though, step back sometimes, drop your tolerance and any developing physical addiction. kicking that can be a lot more dangerous, difficult, and easily relapsed back into, its not worth your time and effort-stay aware man...
youve been through enough.

Great that your concerned about your health. It seems like you are aware that it isn't healthy for ya and your winging it, to help you get through the negative stuff ATM. Sounds like the boredom and stress of your job and/life ATM and perhaps picking up on the boredom of your Co-Workers, is having a big impact on your state of mind...it's good to be aware of these things so you can change your perspective/choices. Dont bullshit yourself...if at 20 your feeling like an Old man; then therein, lies the answer! You are astute and need to change something(what, is up to you)in order to get out of a rut that might loop into a deeper spiral down the road; if you keep moving in the same direction.<3

yes. according to the experts, its too much.
having said that, i've consumed alot more than that for a long time and i'm still here to tell the story.. so maybe its not..

Thanks. Good to see a variety of input.

I didn't drink for a couple days. Had no bad consequences other than a shitty mood, which is caused by adderall withdrawal cuz I lost my script before I could fill it honestly & my doc wouldn't refil it til the next time ots due to be filled. But anyhow.

I got a bottle of vodka (750ml) after work today & I'm drinking it now. Not the whole thing obviously. I don't get that drunk, I never black out, I just drink enough to relax & not care about the bad shit in life. & get a break for a few hrs. I have a slight tolerance. 1/3 of this bottle should be good for one drinking session.

Try going with a 1/4th. That's 4 shots, which is plenty per day if you want to avoid any problems.

Honestly though, alcohol inhibits muscle recovery, so if you are feeling sore from work alcohol will only make things worse.
