I wonder if your job was dispensing/prescribing narcotics for other people, would there be temptations to take some narcotics yourself?

How many doctors/pharmacists are actually users? One in hundred, maybe?

Maybe they would take something once or twice - or now and then - but wouldn't be actual addicts?

Is there any research on this subject? Speculations and discussion around this subject is welcome!

I think these people wouldn't hang out on forums like this and tell about it.

Interesting subject, I think!

I’ve taken drugs like weed and Molly with plenty of doctors.

I’ve known a few that used opioids (abused them).

I couldn’t tell you the percentages though.

Pharmacists probably a lot less get away with it because it’s a ā€œlowerā€ job and they are more subject to drug testing.

Generally the more elite a job is the less they drug test or even care if you are on drugs

Anaesthesiologist's are the most common abuser's of drugs among doctors. It is a fact.

Anesthesiologists on drugs is a horrible thought. They sometimes use paralytics for surgery and forget to knock you out. It happens, people undergo operations awake and can't say or move anything but their eyes.
Which are taped closed to prevent corneal abrasions.

But is it more common to wake up during a surgery. Which is still rare.
Paralytics are used some times. There was a guy who went insane after an operation. The anesthesiologist screwed up and they operated on him. Exploratory surgery for 16 minutes. The guy keep moving his eyes and the tape got loose and they realized he was paralyzed but not knocked out. They gave him a drug to induce amnesia and put him under. They relized the mistake but didn't say anything. He went insane and killed himself. Nobody knew why till they had a doctor review his medical records and it revealed the truth.
Lawsuit for a few million.

The father of modern surgery was a lifelong morphine and cocaine user.

Many nurses and EMTs use drugs to get through their shift.

Idk that there's any kind of valid studies on this due to the controversial nature of it and people not admitting to drug use, but it's definitely a thing.

All sorts of people from all groups, more than one might think, use drugs

Pharmacist here, and used all kind of drugs. As I have quite some acquaintances as medical professionals. I can say a lot used drugs.
Thing is, it’s also quite abundant and easy to get. Knowledge about addiction and the quality leads that most professionals I know, aren’t addicted (yet)

Prolly' way more than we'd think. I know a few local docs who left their practice for awhile to enter de tox. Of course they made up silly excuses for their keave but I knew the nurses there and it was true AF.

We also had a pharm guy shorting people on their scripts quantity. Instead of filling 90, they'd keep a few. I bet it added up quick.

Politicians maybe?

Doctors are just human so ofc some use drugs and ofc it's tempting for some.
Alcohol abuse is obviously the most common, then probably weed and opioids. Whatever drug they choose it must allow them to function at least for quite a while, so I would guess dissos are a rather rare choice, and benzos certainly not to the point of blacking out...
I second that there's hardly gonna be a lot of data available since it's a significant risk for all medical professionals to admit to illegal drug use or even addiction.
And even if they were here they'd hardly tell you about their profession, right?

A friend of mine from high school became a doctor and ended up addicted to opioids. He got caught, had his license taken away, and up shooting himself in the head. His dad was a doctor, too, so I'm sure there was a lot of shame involved.
