How do you know?? ....need help please!!

How do you know
when you love someone?
Is it a feeling in your heart,
a pain when you're apart?
The smile he puts on your face,
the memories you can't erase?
How do you know
if it's really love?
Maybe it's not what it seems,
maybe it's just a dream.
Is it because I need him,
and that's why I had to leave him?
How do you know
if he's the One?
Is it meant to be,
or is that just a fantasy?
A wish I hold to blindly,
hoping he'll come back to me?
How do you know
when you love someone?
Is it when you can set him free,
wanting only for him to be happy?
Caring enough to let him go,
and smiling as you watch him grow?
How do you know?

I wrote this about my boyfriend, I broke up with him a few days ago. And now all of a sudden, I feel like maybe I love him. He called me the other day to tell me his grandpa was dying so he had to go see him, and just hearing that, that's when I realized it. All I want to do is be with him, hold him, and tell him I'm there for him. Not even necessarily get back together with him- just be there for him. I don't know...is it love, or just some dream of being in love and finding someone to love? I'm so confused.

Hi sweetie, this is my advice to you. It's a given that you will be missing your ex, especially after the first week...but you can't rush back to him because of that. And the fact that his grandfather is sick doesn't help the situation, the only thing it does is make you want to be there for him. So my advice is to definetly be there for him as a friend, but don't rush back into something too serious. You just broke up and you have to follow through and see how it is
without him. If you still feel the same way, let's say, after a few weeks, then maybe you did make a mistake. Always remember...if you love something set them free, if they come back they're yours, if they don't, they never were in the first place. PLURR & be strong

I totally am in the same situation. me and my boi have parted for now. although we love each other, we've realized that we need to be apart. we've left our doors open for the future. only time wil tell, but i feel in my heart that he's the one for me and that we'll be together again. all i can do is give him the space. i let him know that i'll be ther for him and give him total support. i'm ok with it and if we do get back together(keep fingers crossed) i feel like we and the relationship will be stronger and more united.

I think many of us, myself included, are still trying to answer that one. So I have no answer to your poem's question.
But I want to let you know that you're my favorite Bluelight poet.
On the technical side, your command of rhythm and rhyme is so refreshing. I tend to cringe at most amature poetry that attempts to rhyme, but you don't force it and it really shows. Spoken aloud the verses tumble comfortably off the tongue.
Artistically you also shine, because you can take a common topic like confusion about romance and unrequited love and still keep it fresh, insightful, and capable of stirring emotion.
