My father (yes, its actually about my father, not me) has sleeping problems and used to take an ambien to sleep, eventually he upped his dose and now he winds up taking probably 3 or 4 xanax and then 2 ambien after that. He doesnt even sleep, he wanders around the house and maybe sleeps at around 3 am. I should mention he usually drinks on top of all of these pills. He's what I'd call a functioning alcoholic. He isnt mean or stupid, he just loses some coordination. He never gets WASTED, he just gets a bit more than tipsy.

My mother is afraid hes going to wind up falling asleep and not waking up because of something having to do with what the pills do to your respiratory tract. Is it up to his tolerance, or is this a very deadly thing?

benzodiazepines have a very good safety profile, and unless he's drinking whiskey by the quart on top of it, it's highly unlikely that it'll end up lethal.

It doesn't sound particularly risky... Just make sure he avoids painkillers with that particular combo.
Some dihydrocodeine could be all it takes to tip him over the edge.

If he does need a painkiller. He should really think about cutting the booze and/or the benzos out of his regime.

Yeah its bad news. Maybe the concoction you described isn't dangerous, but how much more likely is he to take more if he's already doped up on it?

These particular doses are apparently safe for him since he build up slowly towards them. But things could go really bad really fast if he suddenly increases them by a lot or adds another sedative.

Also, stopping this is going to be a bitch even with a slow taper.

if he's physically dependent on both benzodiazepines and alcohol it's gonna be a fucking nightmare to detox from that.
