I have helped design Medical Imaging devices before I retired and have always retained an interest in the related fields.

Here's an interesting article about home building a device that would assist in identifying chemicals through magnetic resonance. This is not a practical device for today because the sample has to be rather large, but the basic principles look good and worth experimentation.
