NEWNAN, Ga. (AP) -- A couple faces charges in the death of their 4-week-old baby after the woman said she accidentally smothered the child on the bed while they were high on drugs.
Joshua Timothy Rex and Bethany Nicole Brookshire, both 21, have been charged with involuntary manslaughter, possession of marijuana, possession of crystal methamphetamine and possession of
ecstasy.
According to sheriff's reports, Brookshire called 911 after the alleged accident on Oct. 24 and met the responding deputy saying, "I'm on drugs. I'm on drugs. I killed my baby."
Authorities said Brookshire drank alcohol and smoked marijuana before going to sleep and rolled on top of the infant, who was cradled in her arms.
"It is a tragedy, but there is another 15-month old child in the house, and DFACS (Department of Family and Children Services) has taken control of that child and substantiated neglect as well," said Coweta Sheriff's Sgt. John Kennedy.
The couple had a preliminary hearing Thursday, and they are scheduled for arraignment Jan. 12, said Assistant District Attorney Ray Mayer.
