I am trying to get off heroin. I have suboxone but last time I switched directly from a half gram a day heroin habit to suboxone and I found the transition rather rough, so I thought I would try to taper my heroin dose down a bit before starting the suboxone. I took 1/4th my normal heroin dose the past two days. I suffereed a lot and i think this was actually rougher than just switching to suboxone. However, I am concerned about erasing the progress I've made. I was hoping to get some sleep tonight (after none last night) but I broke down and took my dose for today around 7 pm. If I take more heroin tonight (assuming i can't sleep) wil that erase all the progress I've made? I am thinking about just going on suboxone tomorrow. BAsically, I want to know, If I take enough heroin to get well (but not high) will that erase my progress or did I not suffer in vein these two days?

I wouldn't think of it as suffering in vain (in vein is more like an IV ;)) but... the more heroin you use, the more you will have to come down. Think of it like that. Start the transition to Suboxone ASAP.

In fact, I'd take 1-2 days not taking anything, before you take Suboxone, and it'll work better.

Just make sure to take as small of a dose of suboxone as possible. Just take a little bit of suboxone for 3 days, and then deal with a few shitty days after that. It shouldn't be that bad.

You sure thats best? I read in another thread it was best to go on sub before things got real bad because if you wait til they are you wont get as much relief from the sub. Like i was saying, last time my transition to sub was really rough didn't sleep for several days and had awful leg pain. Anyway, I just took some more heroin because I want to get at least a little sleep tonight and then Ill transition to subs when withdrawal kicks back in. How long shouild I spend on subs before I just quit completely? I dont have to go back to work until wednesday of next week and I can afford to take a few sick days, so i can afford to feel bad. If anyone could give me a timeline for when I should drop the subs based on that let me know.

I am also planning a trip jan. 13th with a girl that i have a major crush on. If I take a sub before that (so i can feel well on the trip in case im still feeling bad from withdrawal) will that how much will that set me back?

I felt absolutely horrible quitting heroin and taking sub but when it kicked in, I felt at least 50% better by the time I had 4mg in my system.

I think if bupe doesn't work well for you, then maybe methadone or tapering with heroin is your best bet?

I tapered with heroin for 3 days now I am attempting to switch to sub. I don't have any methadone.

Well my heroin taper worked. It worked better than I thought it would in fact. Taking enough heroin to get well did not erase my progress. The suboxone kicked in and I feel tons better. Much better than I did the time I went straight from heroin to suboxone, which was really painful (although still way better than cold turkey heroin). Suboxone can truly be a wonder drug for withdrawal, you just can't go straight from a huge heroin habit onto it and expect it to be painless. But Three days of tapering heroin seems to have done the trick for me, and made the transition much easier.

Exactly, I was actually just explaining that to someone today.

For past experience using suboxone, although I was self-medicating, I only had to wait a number of hours before making the transition smoothly. Now, of course precipitated w/d is an issue, so treat lightly. I'm not a betting man, but if I was, I'd bet my experience with suboxone would have been a lot more fruitful, even successful, maybe, if I had worked with an MD.

My recommendation:

  • If possible work under the care of a doctor, a good MD with a good reputation in using suboxone.
  • Don't worry about the transition more than you have to. In my case, my mind has been known to fox with me. Making up any excuse possible to stay on the dope. So just dive in. If you switch before things, as has been said, get shitty, you'll be SO much better off for it in the future. Trust me. Been there.
  • Make yourself comfortable during the transition. In my case, when in w/d, I like to play the dude. Letting my freak flag fly. Bathrobes and moccasins. Sun glasses. Headphones. House music. DXM ;) Get a manicure. Contrary action my friend, contrary action.

Now, I mentioned DXM. I was able to get off the dope without suboxone this time around using DXM. It was a god send, to be sure. I feel amazing. And, to go from needing, literally needing, heroin to feel a modicum of happiness, to five days of low plateau experiences of glorious DXM, doing a complete 180 and feeling coming out of the episode experiencing TRUE happiness again without the dope... Well, it's a truly amazing thing.

PM me if you want help trying the DXM. As you wouldn't be working probably wouldn't be prescribed the DXM by a Doc, and it's a powerful drug in itself, you'll need all the help you can get. If I had someone to guide me through the psychedelic experience, I would have been happier for it. But what am I say?! I'm happy as a clam with EVERYTHING about life now anyways, as shitty as some of it may be.

I would def go ahead and start taking the sub because its hard to taper off of heroin. Everyone wants to do it but it takes a lot of self control that most addicts dont have. i wouldnt take suboxone for longer than a week before i quit also.
Ive made the transition numerous times and ive found that the more heroin im using the less the suboxone will work for me whenever i switch. But if i havent been using for more than a few weeks and not large amounts then suboxone will take away almost 100% of the withdraws. Even when im coming off of a really long run and the suboxone doesnt fully work its still wayyy better than cold turkey. If you can find some subutex it works considerably better than the suboxone also.
