Heroin now Legal?!?!

as an american...all i have to say is

i am tired of american point of view...cheers to any alternative approach to the tired policies america has over enforced for far too long.

yay canada!

We have that in the netherlands too, and it really helps keeping the heroin addicts out of trouble. Here people who are registered as an heroin addict can get the drugs for free (so they wont have to steal or get themselves into some serious kind of trouble)

Imagine this: A heroin addict lies cold on the streets

Look at this: A heroin addict can stay inside, health is monitored, and people walking the streets won't have to look at some junkie who is dying.

its also a lot of easier for them to get professional help.

Yeah Sydney, Australia has had one for a year or so. The results are excellent and were it not for certian conservative figures (who have ended attacks on the idea ) then it would be a far more regular development for communities.

The users still have to get the drugs themselves though, but they dont have to fear the cops around the center.

Thus far no deaths, 80+ people who have OD'ed and with the care there lived to tell the tale. Its sensible policy for drug use all around.

Opening shooting-galleries and legalizing heroin are completley different things. A step in the right direction though...

up until recently, i worked with trip http://www.torontoraverinfoproject.ca/

who in turn worked with our sister project out in vancouver to push to get this open, and then open one here in toronto.
it seemed like a great idea at the time, and granted its proberbly going to prevent endless numbers of overdoses, but i really dont like the way they've gone about setting it up. the whole thing is too inviting.

the canadian harm reduction networkhttp://canadianharmreduction.com/ did a survey a few years back basicly asking youngins what was stopping them from from using typically percieved "hard" drugs, when they would happily do other, more popular drugs like ecstacy, acid, ect.

overwhemlingly, those kids replied it was the fear of overdose. today, i find that most young adults feel the same. the image of a skinny, homeless youth sitting in an ally using a dirty needle to shoot up and ultimatly die is an image that still scares people who regularly dose designer drugs they buy from strangers at raves. and while i'm not all that supportive of the whole 'scared straight' initative, it worked in this situation.

anyway. with these 'shooting gallerys' promising nurses to protect you from any nasty overdosing, and other users to spend the time with, as well as a 'chill out room' if you arent having a good time, i think more people are going to stop being afraid or heroin and go and try it.

they've been trying to get this going for two years now. and the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (http://www.vandu.org) got fed up and opened their own, illegal and unsanctioned safe injection site. they didnt advertise it. they didnt ensure no one would overdose. they didnt provide comfy little cubicles for each user. it was in a rough part of town, in a run down building, that provided medical attention if needed, clean needles, and addiction councillers on standby. it was designed for the truly desprete, and thats what it got, they only saw 15-30 users a night. the new injection site, with its snazzy posters plastered up downtown and its 18hr availability, already expects to see over a hundred users a day.

not that the principals of this arent a good idea. but its being marketed as a 'safe place' to do hard drugs, especially if your nervous and new to the drugs.

California needs to become a canadian province.. then life would be sweet

Every time i look at other counties policy on various matters I always think the US seems so backward

They mentioned cocaine, does this mean there will finally be a place where pure, pharmaceutical-grade cocaine will be available? That would be nice seeing people addicted to stimulants get some kind of place to administer safely as well. This is a great idea, hopefully the US will give in and just say "what the fuck" in a few years. For being such a "great" country, we sure have a lot of prejudice towards people who want to get high. Why have bars?

no. at least not here. as with heroin, you find your own, bring it with you. should the quality be bad, and cause any adverse health reactions or an unpleasent trip, the staff will interviene.

i like how the netherlands requires users of these facilities to register as drug addicts, and then supplies them with clean product. no matter what facilities you build, this is the only way to ensure some safety and reserve these services for those who truly need them.

also. its odd. america seems to have some of the strictest drug laws ever. they seem so hell bent on harshly punishing anyone whos ever even thought of doing drugs, yet the problem doesnt improve.

Makes me wonder if they would enforce any distribution laws there. I am sure when someone runs out they would try to buy from someone there who is holding instead of going back on the street to get more. Seems like it could be an open market.

the area is considered "special" in that although there are cops there, they arent to enforce the normal laws of the street. so, no possession charges.

just before this opened, there was a huge debate between the law enforcement of vancouver, and the harm reductionists. cops had started a big crackdown, supposedly, they were targeting the big dealers, but records later showed they were going after users, too, although some did deal a bit on the side to support their addiction.

anyway. i dont think the cops would bust one user for selling a small amount of his personal stash to another user within the facility, although, they have said they will not tolerate dealers 'setting up shop' there.

"Under Canadian law and the international drug control agreements that Canada has signed, the only way a safe injection site can operate is to get an exemption under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act," explained Steve Leary, executive assistant to Mayor Larry Campbell, who championed the site.

so, you cant really be charged with distribution, but i doubt it will turn into an open market. but since this is the first site of its kind in canada, who knows what will happen. i think we'll have to wait and see

progressive, nice:)

BC definitly makes the US (yes even you california) look so square and prudish. Anyone actually live there or visited for an extended period? whats it like?

Thats super cool. That is harm-reduction at its finest. Only if there was a place where people could do MDMA undersupervision, with a dancefloor, and a chillout room. With free water and nurses incase anything else happens. That would be cool. But back to the point. Kudos to our neighbor to the north for showing some compasion and reducing harm

I'm all for heroin users being monitored. I lost a brother to heroin, so of course I'm going to be all set towards any measures that prevents the death of an addict. I am wondering if there are ever going to be steps to provide drug conselling, to help addicts kick their habit.

It's all good and well to minimise harm with a drug, but if there is addiction involved, maybe there should be steps taken by the government to get these people off heroin.

That said, I'm completely against the methadone program. In an ideal world, addicts should be clean of ANY drug.

Where do they get there heroin from?

Is it pharmacutical quality?

What is the dosage?
Sliding doasage scale I suspect.

I assume it is white dope, correct?

Is it similar to methadone clinics, start you off slow?

Do they have a govt. regulated dosage? Meaning, they start you out on 100mg and than work there way up to a desired dose?

What about tolerence issues?
