Heroin, crack and confusion

So I'm new here today, found the place whilst browsing the Internet for advice on heroin addiction recovery. My new partner has been open enough with me to tell me about his past, on and off heroin and crack, for quite a number of years. I've had addiction problems (still do I guess) myself so I'm quite familiar with how the mind of an addict works etc.. the advice I'm looking for is more how to notice if he's still involved with either substance. I have my suspicions that he is hiding something from me, but don't want to jump to any wrong conclusion and freak him out, make him shut off from me completely.

Is there anyone with the knowledge and experience to be able to help me out a little? Would be greatly appreciated! ?

First of all, ask him.
If he says he doesn't do heroin & crack ever now, the only way you will ever know for sure, is

• If you trust him to be honest with you
• Catch him in the act
• Find drug paraphernalia in his/your property

Of course there are physical & behavioural signs that someone is doing either of those drugs, such as pupil size and alertness (I personally can tell if someone has had a hit of heroin if they have had enough to be properly affected) but these are not absolute proof.
Also bear in mind that many people function very well in life with drug habits and nobody at work or their family has the slightest idea (Me being one of these for many years)
If you don't trust that he's telling you the truth, then it's a sign that either you have problems with trust & he's entirely innocent or he's not acting in a trustworthy manner.
Either way, it's not the best foundation for a successful relationship.
