Hey everybody!
Thanks in advance for any input!
In short, heres my problem:
I am young adult male in my 20's, recently got out of rehab and currently living in a 'recovery house'. Have also been in a physc ward, for mild physcotic symptomns. Mostly my problem is anxiety, and sometimes it drives me to extreme lengths. As of late (last 6 months) I've been quite stable, and frankly just have a bad temper and prone to get into arguments with parents (sometimes use obscentities) and that makes them think I am crazy. I am an opiate addict but dabble in other substances from time to time. Currently on a low dose of suboxone (gotta love that norbupe!) Anyways my parents pay my rent, and I have to do small things like couensling, drug test, blah blah, etc. b/c I dont have a job right now. Anyways I was on a low dose of seroquel (prescribed a 100mg daily, but took more like 25-50mg). I didnt particulary mind the seroquel b/c of the antichollergenic effects and often combined with the suboxone, made me a bit noddy (if you can even call it that) Anyways i was on seroquel (no more than 100mg daily) and gained almost '50+ lbs!!!' in 6 months. It was ridicolous, as well as sleeping 12 hours a day and having no energy as well as being depressed and having 'flat emotion' So i tapered myself off the seroquel, relatively painlessly (with the help of diphy.) So i've been of seroquel a month now and feel great! I lost around 40 lbs in the month i've been of it and i feel so much more alive, as well as feeling like i have a bit more of a handle of my addictions.
Anyways, parents are pissed I got off seroquel and are threatning to cut me off financially unless i get back on a (mood stabilizer). I 've had many physc. dr. in the past and up until 6 months i was prescribed (klonopin 1mg and diazapam 10mg) daily for anxiety. Well my most recent rehab stint, the self righteous dr.s cut me of my benzos (b/c i am an addict) Which is a load of bs, b/c i never abused my benzos and my dr.s in the past all agreed that i *DID in fact need a benzo, (despite being on suboxone) b/c of my *severe social/general anxiety*
So my current shrink is a tool, and wont give me anything that will actually help, Hes set on *abilify and *geodone.
Obviously I dont *have to take what I am prescribed since I dont live with my parents and at this *recovery house* they dont monitor your meds at all. Its my body.
So I am not gonna take something I dont want to *BUT* if the dr.s are set on a *mood stabilizer* what is the closest thing (chemically related) to a benzo & or *anti-histamine action.
Obviously I am not gonna get anything that great, but I was wondering if you any of you out there know of anything that is classified as a *mood stabilizer* but is loosely related to a *benzo or *anti-histamine.
Thanks thanks thanks!
sorry for the long winded rant, its just these self righteous prick shrinks piss me off somtimes

They're going to be very hesitant to ever write your benzos if you are on suboxone. Even more so if you have a history of opiate addiction. It's not a much as them being pricks as it is not wanting you to have a script in the case that you relapse on opiates and the combination of the two lands you in trouble. Your age also factors into the equation as doctors are hesitant to start people on a long term benzo regimen unless there is literally no other option.

There is hydroxyzine, it's not a benzo and is sometimes used for anxiety.

Have you tried any beta-blockers? They are non-narcotic but propranolol really helped with my psychical anxiety symptoms.

Thanks for the response!
I have been on benzos for the last 3 years (with suboxone the last year) up until 6 months ago. Like I said, many of drs. until this current one agreed i did in fact need a benzo (despite being on suboxone) b/c of severe anxiety.
Since this latest stint in rehab, everybody is GUN HO about not being on benzos and instead of being on a *mood stabilizer* when in fact thats not my problem, I actually just have real bad anxiety. (part of the reason I am addicted to opiates)

I have tried hydroxyzine (in one of stints in rehab a year ago) that worked *ok* no where near effective as a benzo, but sort of like taking some benadryl.

I am on *80mg* of propranolol daily ( i should have mentioned that) It *does* take the edge off but still leaves something to be desired.

Frankly as of late ive resorted to drinking ( 2-3 drinks daily) for anxiety, as much of a stigma it has. honestly having take both alcohol and benzos long term, they are almost identical in its effects (GABA agonism)

So yeah, to sum it up, the shrink wants to give me a *mood stabilizer* just trying to find something that might have some *GABA* *anti-histamine* action.

I hear *olanzapine* is a *thienobenzodiazpine* and has *weak* 'GABA' activity..

any thoughts?

thanks!!!
