About 30 mins ago, my brother did some heroin VIA I.V. He was having trouble getting it to register and I noticed a good vein on this hand. It's his right hand on his ring finger. It was up by his knuckle. He registered quickly and plunged it home. Shortly after he said his hand was going numb and I noticed it was swelling as well. It swelled up pretty big and hasnt really gotten any better. To me it did not seem like an artery hit because I seen it fill and seen the color of the blood. He also reported a rush imediately and said it didnt burn when he did it. Any ideas? Do we need to go to the hospital?

The swelling will go down. I've just done a shot in the EXACT same place and it's a little swollen. It's because the veins there are so small they have been damaged. Keep an eye on it. If the swelling gets worse then I'd think about seeing a doctor but in pretty sure it will be okay. Just make sure he stays away from shooting in that vein till has healed.

I have no good veins either. Imagine having to stay at the hospital and they have to put the IV in your hand for a few days.
It looks a bit swollen. If it just happened, apply ice. After that they say put heat on it to encourage blood flow.
But if it gets worse, he should have it looked at.

I have used the veins in my hands before and the ones right near my knuckles and my hand did usually swell up as well but it always went down in a day or so and sometimes quicker.
It never gave me any lasting problems or pain though.

I've used that spot before by the ring finger and had the same reaction. Rush, then numbness and swelling. I know it's not an artery. I think that vein runs really close to a nerve.

Above posters are spot on, apply ice for the swelling and it should be ok. The vessels in the hand are fairly delicate and easy to damage but being an area that gets damaged alot its also quick to heal. Things to watch for are swelling that spreads, pain travelling up the arm from the site and discolouration in the fingers affected. Any fingers directly below the swelling may be come slightly more pale and feel cooler but any heavy discolouration should be investigated by the doc.

I dont know about anyone else here but if i did (or ever did ) I.V drugs and stuff like this happened id go to the ER. Then again i live in canada.

this has happened to me many many times, especially in my earlier days of using. he registered and was in a vein but it may have slipped out, or in some other way breached the wall of the vein, which then interacted with a nerve. it WILL go away. i run warm water over the area to get the dope and blood flowing, and then ice liberally. thats exactly what the hospital will do for you anyways, only you'll have to deal with authority and a nice big medical bill, and then kick yourself in the ass for overreacting. absolutely no need to go to the ER just now. expect the area to be swollen and sore, but that will subside soon. he's not gonna lose his hand or anything.

I find that heat is the best remedy, then maybe some ice like others have said. The veins in the hand are pretty delicate, looks like he slipped out during the shot or blew the vein. Don't shoot there again til the swelling is gone (or possibly ever to prevent it from happening again). You can put rice in a sock, tie it off and microwave it for a minute or so to make a warm compress. Not minute rice, has to be uncooked. And don't microwave it for too long or repeat too many times in a row or it'll burn. Good luck!

It's not a miss. Cause he said he got it all and got the rush. This swelling is normal when using the small veins between the knuckles.
