Hey
So I heard the other day someone talk about how overdoses can damage ones hearing.
Like every overdose reduces ones hearing by some degree.

Is there any truth to this?

Thanks!

There's been times when i got into trandol a little too heavy & wound up with a ringing in my ears the next day. You 'heard' of ototoxicity?

overdoses on what?

i remember my first overdose on opiates when i was around 12 or something i took 6 perc 5's (30mg oxy) and i was a small kid when i was younger, but i still wouldn't call it a full out OD like i got from H as an adult (almost died, would have if my kids mom wasn't there to wake me up every 2 minutes slapping me in the face lol).. but my hearing did get harder and everything sounded far away. I donno if that is what you mean.

Yeah ive experienced those ringing sounds, everyone whos done a lot of Cocaine knows the bells.

But what I mean is permanent hearing loss.. if by overdoses (what drug doesn't matter - any drug) you can get permanent hearing loss?

i got deaf on an OD of opiates is what i was saying.. weather it left permanent damage i don't know, but i don't think it did.

ah yeah when i OD'ed on XTC (were talkin like 2 grams of molly), I like thought I died and had all this hearing crackling loss...sometimes still all of a sudden I'll hear the crackle.

I believe excessive/long-term APAP use, either alone or with opiate/NSAID (APAP) combination products (such as Vicodin, Percocet, etc) can cause hearing loss.

(from Abstract)

...

RESULTS: Hydrocodone overuse was associated with rapidly progressive sensorineural hearing loss in 12 patients. In four patients the initial presentation was unilateral, and two of the patients experienced vestibular symptoms. None of the 12 patients experienced improved thresholds after high-dose prednisone. Seven of the eight patients undergoing cochlear implantation have demonstrated early success with their devices.

CONCLUSIONS: Hydrocodone is frequently prescribed in combination with acetaminophen for the relief of pain and has a side effects profile similar to other medications in its class. Although not described previously, overuse or abuse can be associated with a rapidly progressive sensorineural hearing loss. These patients can be successfully rehabilitated with cochlear implantation.

Deafness associated with abuse of hydrocodone/acetaminophen.

I believe there are studies out there that show correlation between opiates and hearing loss. Do a search in here, it's been discussed in the past.

I'm not sure about OD's though.

Yeah I can't think of any reason why an acute overdose on opiates would harm your hearing after you've recovered. It is possible it is a chronic issue though.

As for other drugs I know that hearing problems are associated with acute aspirin poisoning but I think it is still generally temporary. I would guess anything that could effect the flow of blood through the membranes in your ears could be an issue.

In that case amphets and other stims would probably cause it as well..

I remember one time after fixing walking about two steps away from the table and passing out on the floor. Then I woke up after having my face planted in the carpet and discovering I couldn't hear much of anything. Felt worse worse than having my ears stuffed with industrial ear plugs.
This was bad because someone was suppose to drop off pizza. It's difficult pretending to be connected to people when you can't fucking hear them. You just smile and nod hoping no one notices.

My hearing recovered thankfully.

i overdosed on methadone and my mom stumbled upon me and shaked me and i woke up but i couldn't see or hear anything every sound was so muffled and far away and my sight was not there but slowly it came back... but to this day my sight and hearing has never came back to normal methadone is gnarly stuff i didn't really realize what i was doing i took 60-mg and the next night that i od i took 80-mg but methadone builds up in your system so it was really like i took 140-mg and as soon as i made the decision to close my eyes G_G be careful guys im so sad that my perfect 20 20 vision is no longer with me and my keen hearing is gone

yes it

In response to the question "Hearing Loss due to Overdoses -(possible?)

Yes, this certainly can happen, it happened to me following my one and only experiment with heroin. I ended up in a coma and when I came round the world was very silent indeed! This was over 2 years ago and since my hearing has never improved, I have constant tinnitus and now wear two hearing aids :)

I was told initially that it might be nerve damage, however after an MRI scan I was told that there was damage whatsoever? Very odd

BE WARNED

Hearing damage from non-fatal opiate overdose is well documented in the research. For some people it comes back without any problems, other people are left with permanent hearing loss.

I overdosed on oxy in Vegas.. Went to a Strip Club and Pool Party in my condition nontheless.. and come to think of it I did have some trouble hearing people when I was falling asleep and waking up every 5 minutes. lol

i have heard of this with stimulate abuse: from the 'bells' effect as mentioned which is caused by blood rushing through your head. IDK, seems that after so many big-ones this could do some damage... i mean, thats all ive been able to hear before, that and white noise with enough IV cocaine.

if it can try and pop a heart, some ear-drums or something seem easy enough.
