Has Anyone Tried Oral Nicotine (gum)? Also, Nicotine Triggers Beta-Endorphin?

1. Has anyone, smokers and non-smokers alike taken oral nicotine via chewing gum?

I am interested for the people who have a tolerence what it did as well for the people that don't what it did.

2. As well Wikipedia says nicotine can trigger the beta-endorphins in higher doses. Does this ring true to anyone?

I know that if I smoke a pack a day I get gittery and anxious instead of opiated or anywhere near calm/relaxed. As for my tolerence I usually have anywhere from 0-5 smokes a day.

I will admit however that sheesha smoked properly in a hooka is pretty much a state of total relaxation. Sometimes I like it just as much as I would cannabis or hashish (esp that my tolerence for THC is way too high now).

The next best thing to sheesha is flavored pipe tobacco that comes in 50g and 42g pouches like Amphora, Borkum Riff, Capitan Black and others like that. Instead of using a pipe, usually I just roll them in papers and smoke it like that. I find the effects from that kind of tobacco very different as well, in that its more relaxing than normal tobacco but not as 'sedating' as sheesha. Not really stimulating but still uplifting.

I also find cigars (cubans) give a distinct feel/effect. Its hard to explain but theres nothing to compare it to. I find it just as harsh as regular tobacco and stronger than regular tobacco. I find that it makes me very creative, productive and dreamy but stimulated as well.

Regular cigarettes I just find to be motivating, outgoing and simulating to the point of 'rushy' type feeling. However I get a noticable uplifting/mood boost from a cigarette.

Wikipedia states:

"Pain is reduced by the increases of acetylcholine and beta-endorphin. Anxiety is reduced by the increase of beta-endorphin. Nicotine also increases sensitivity in brain reward systems.[26] Most cigarettes (in the smoke inhaled) contain 0.1 to 2.8 milligrams of nicotine.[27]

Research suggests that, when smokers wish to achieve a stimulating effect, they take short quick puffs, which produce a low level of blood nicotine.[28] This stimulates nerve transmission. When they wish to relax, they take deep puffs, which produce a high level of blood nicotine, which depresses the passage of nerve impulses, producing a mild sedative effect. At low doses, nicotine potently enhances the actions of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain, causing a drug effect typical of those of psychostimulants. At higher doses, nicotine enhances the effect of serotonin and opiate activity, producing a calming, pain-killing effect. Nicotine is unique in comparison to most drugs, as its profile changes from stimulant to sedative/pain killer in increasing dosages and use."

Ive chewed nicotine gum before and am not a smoker and dont have any tolerance to nicotine. I tried it multiple times are doseages of 2mg-4mg. it gives the same burning sensation in the throat tobacco does. You do feel significant effecrs from the nicotine but it isn't pleasurable at all. I do enjoy nicotine every once in a while (maybe a cig a month) but found the gum devoid of any recreational value.

I had nicotine gum a few times when I was younger and still at high school. I was a smoker then (still am) and I noticed that it seemed to make me feel slightly stimulated and when I had my usual smokes at lunch they made me feel more dizzy than normal and a little sick.

Couldn't tell you much more than that, don't remember how long it lasted or what the dose was as it was a few years ago.

I've used nicorette gum in attempt to quit smoking...I was smoking about a pack a day...it hardly helped with cravings and it just wasnt the same as smoking so i gave it up...

but as regards to a buzz, i dont recall any. maybe a little bit the first time...but the proper way to chew the gum is to chew it for about 5 minutes then stick it on the side of your mouth for a little the continue chewing it and repeat till its done...

Actually before I was a heavy smoker, someone gave me a 4mg piece and I got very dizzy and nauseas...bad idea..

I found the gum to work alot better than something like the nicotrol inhaler. the key to making the gum work is chewing slowly, about twenty times, then putting it off to the side. when that spicy nicotine feeling goes away you keep on chewing. it worked pretty well for me.

I used it on and off for about 2 years and I have been completely nicotine free now for 2 months (except one cigar at a bachelor party, which I'll mention later). I liked it as even though I was still addicted to nicotine, I wasn't putting as many toxins in my body. I started with 4mg (because it was the same price as 2mg) even though it's reccommended for people who smoke more than a pack a day. This was a mistake because I smoked just a few cigs on an average day (a pack or more while partying every now and then). The 4mg kicked my ass at first and gave a strong buzz. Eventually I switched to 2mg, then started trying to limit the number that I would have in a day. Even though I had cut down to 1-2 pieces a day I still had pretty shitty withdrawals when I finally stopped. I had been smoking/using the gum for about 7 years.

The physical aspect of withdrawals were worse for me than the psychological ones. I couldn't sleep well for days, I was very "out of it" and very irritable, etc. I could not wait to get home every night to smoke a bowl to even myself out. I also experienced these weird time dilations for the first couple of weeks after quitting.

I smoked a cigar over a week after quitting and went through the same exact symptoms again. The withdrawal is enough motivation for me to never pick up another product containing nicotine. It's a bitch.

I took a piece of my auntie's nicotine gum as a kid when she left it lying around thinking it was normal gum. It made me feel sick and dizzy. If you're looking into it as an alternative buzz for smoking, its a bad idea. If you want a nicotine delivery system without the bad health risks then get an E-cigarette. It's just nicotine, but its smoked exactly like a cigarette, but since there's no tobacco (and even no combustion) you don't get lung cancer or any of the negative side effects of smoking. You can also get it in different flavours instead of tobacco like vanilla, chocolate, etc. It's the perfect alternative!

True, and they have different concentrations that allow you to step down your nicotine level. They even have a 0mg conc. which is for when you quit but are still orally fixated on it, I guess. That part seems kind of pointless for me, but I guess it may work for others. Gum, patch, ecig, anything but tobacco is a step in the right direction.

When I was out of fags a few years ago, I took some nicotine gum that contained 6mg each...the problem was that I ignored the label or I hadn't even noticed what it said but what I remember is that I couldn't feel the effects after chewing one gum so I proceeded to chew one more and fel extremely sick. Note I smoke like 5-6 sometimes more tabs a day, and that doesn't even hit that 6mg that one of those gums contained. However my tolerance to nicotine has grown a lot, I mean lot since I started smoking shisha tobacco, even it is supposed to contain less nicotine than cigarettes. I find it more addictive as well. It's maybe the ritual of setting up the pipe and stuff. Although I don't understand why you would want to waste that absolutely lush shisha by rolling it up, instead of taking mega massive hits out of a hookak. It allows you to take in a lot more smoke from one hit than it does from one drag.

I quit for quite quite awhile using nicotine gum. The generic brands taste better and have a better texture than Nicorette. Look around and see what is available near you. Stupidly, I started again when my life improved, go figure, but I am quitting again before the end of the year...this time for good...and will definitely be utilizing the gum again.

Hey, I quit opiates...quitting smoking is NOTHING like that hell on earth!

Ive always found nicotine gum to be shit for trying to quit smoking. It never did anything for me but made me feel abit sick. Ive had up to a 50 cigg a day habit and have chewed gum while on the patch and it's still not worked :! .

The only good results ive gotten are from bupropion but i even smoke on that now :( .

Buccal nicotine won't induce beta-endorphin release anymore than smoked nicotine will. Just want to get that out there.

I still have ten boxes of 60 pieces of gum that I got for free. I just don't know what to do with them. I tried the 4mg and it didn't do shit for me. I don't really smoke either. I've tried the sublingual tablets as well. They had some effect, but it wasn't much.

I've never tried pure nicotine (gum or patch), but from using tobacco I can tell you that it indeed does feel like some endorphins and serotonin (I have a good feel for them) are released at higher doses. However, at those doses i'm likely to feel nausea/queeziness, so I'd rather keep it at the lower stimulating doses. I'd rather have an actual opiate or serotoninergic for the painkilling or calming effect.

Tobacco isn't just nicotine. It has other naturally occuring psychoactive alkaloids such as harmaline, nitrous oxide, myristicin, and others. Also, has all those additives, some of which are psychoactive like chloroform. Levels of the tobacco alkaloids and additives vary from brand to brand. Some rolled tobacco also contains cloves and other herbs such as kreteks. Thus explaining the differing effects between different cigarettes, cigars, pipe/bong tobacco, etc.

I'm gonna quit smoking so i have 40 gums and i'm chewing one at this very moment. It's ok, I don't crave any ciggie ATM so i'm hoping a lot it will help even a little bit...

Beta-endorphin is measured by plasma levels, and when in plasma it has a hard time crossing the BBB. So I'm not sure if it could have a large opiate effect. Nicotine also increases cyp3a4, which will decrease the levels of other opiates faster

I'm like, the biggest nicotine fiend on the planet. (I'm the type of person who has smoked a cigarette while chewing two pieces of Nicorette while wearing a high dose Nicotine patch, & didn't think anything of it until somebody told me "you're gonna die!!") . So, yes, I'm incredibly familiar with Oral Nicotine gum or however you phrased it... Basically Nicorette & cheaper brands of Nicotine gum are what you're talking about I'm guessing.

I've been on & off as addicted to chewing Nicorette gum as I've been addicted to smoking for years & years. I don't think I've ever come across anybody who's successfully quit smoking through Nicotine gum. I've definitely come across & heard of people who tried to quit smoking using Nicotine gum & ended up addicted to either Nicotine gum instead of cigarettes, or both Nicotine gum & cigarettes.

So I'd say that if you're searching for alternatives to cigarettes that you can feel the effects from the most or whatever, then Nicorette would definitely be your best bet for that.

If you're trying to quit smoking, use the patch instead.

The gums work wonders for me. Cravings go away as soon as I chew one of these saviors.

I have used the Nicorette 4mg before, not to quit smoking, but rather chewing tobacco.
It really worked well. Then they came out with the "intense" cinnamon flavor that I dearly loved. I started buying like 160 pieces at a time, and chewing 4 pieces(16mg) at once.
Figured I didn't need another addiction to feed, so I stopped.

But at 16mg/dose, I felt a bit nervous, and jittery. Not calming at all. Hope this helps.

Best
