Halving or quartering 40 mg oxycontin OP pills?

I have looked everywhere and I'm still confused. Prescribed 40mg oxy OP for chronic pain from a car accident. He switched me from Lortab to oxy because im now extremely tolerant to lortab (30 mg at once didnt even phase me, 40-50 mg in 4 hours didnt even really phase me) . I took the 40mg oxy and its too strong. I dont know if it just affects me differently than lortab, but now it's too much at once for me. Pharmacists are telling me different things and pain doc isnt going to be back in office until monday. All I need to know-if I cut it in half, will it still retain its time release or will I get the whole dose? I cannot find a clear answer anywhere. :?
 
It is tricky. Reformulated Oxycontin has the official wording saying it is tamper resistant from the FDA. In order to achieve this, the drug companies must show tolerability and efficacy, pharmacokinetic data, and drug liking info. Oxycontin has cleared all these hurdles but Purdue still states not to chew, crush or damage the tablet. It may simply be a legal thing, but it is still a relatively young formulation issue and dose dumping, while certainly limited, is not out of the question.
 
I used to cut the 80 mgs up using a pill cutter (broke a few too) and I never had the sense that the medicine released all at once. Now the OC's definitely would have but with the OP's, they're like plastic and I kind of think the tamper resistant thing stays pretty much intact IMHO.
 
I broke the blade on a pill cutter trying to cut one in half too. If you can manage to break it, see if that works.
 
When I was Rx'd the new OPs I found it more effective actually to break in half (better absorption). I think I broke a pill cutter too but you should be fine just taking half of one.
 
Thanks everyone, you made me feel better about trying it. So far so good, but it was A COMPLETE BITCH to break it in half, DEAR MOTHER FOOTBALLS. What finally worked was me putting it on a hard surface, putting both my palms on the safe side of a serrated bladed knife, and pushing down with all the force I could, but it finally worked! And so far so good, I don't feel over medicated, still get a little nice "kick", and it doesnt seem to have harmed me yet. So all is well so far. Thanks y'all
 
Oh- and while we are on the subject, I'm an oxy newbie (prescribed by doc) what IS the difference between OC and OP?? I dont know what people are talking about when they say the "old OC?" Are they just referring tot he different formulation? Thanks in advance, I'm a noob at all this stuff.

Since it's been awhile since you wrote this, I was thinking you may have already found an answer to you question but just in case you didn't... The old OC's could be crushed into powder and from there your options were wide open, if you get my drift. The newer OP's can't be crushed since they are practically made of plastic and hard as a rock. You can see from posts on this thread, they're hard enough to break pill-cutters, so there you go. So, that's the difference between the two and no prob answering your question noob (Welcome)!
