Well lads, can someone help me out here, Im thinking of trying to grow one of my own plants indoors. Just the one, not for selling or anything, personal use only. I never did it before, and I'm at a loss as to what sort of stuff I need. I looked up a load of websites trying to find out exactly the best conditions but almost all said different stuff.

I know this is done a lot, so hopefully someone with experience can help me out. How difficult is it?? Is it just a matter of germinating, planting, and keeping a light bubl over the pot, or is it harder? And as well, does the plant give off to much of a smell if its growing? Like if it was growing in a wardrobe or something, would you smell it, when you came into the room?

Hi Don,

There is no "right" way to grow cannabis. It can be as easy or as difficult as you make it; how much care you give to it will certainly affect quality.

My suggestion to you is to read some forums like Rollitup, IC Mag, etc. Learn the basics (PH, soil mediums, genetics, etc.) and go from there. No half-assing things. There are a few grow threads on this forum also, but you will get more on boards geared toward cultivation.

In any case you will learn just as much through hands-on experience / trial & error as you will through reading
 
You could start out with florescent lights which is inexpensive but yields less buds, grows slower.
You could start this with as little as 100-200$

Or you could go with HPS which will yield much more, grow faster, and in my experience yield denser nugs.
An HPS setups will all together probably start you off around 500$+

If you do decide to go HPS dont waste your time/energy/power just growing one plant when you could get two or three nice plants with a 400w

I would recommend you start with

400w HPS light w/ fixture ballast and bulb (If you want get a metal halide bulb for vegging though an inexpensive fluorescent setup does well vegging too)
4 in. Squirrel cage fan

Soil mix (hydro gets expensive) << youll need these things wether or not you decide HPS or fluro
Nutrient beginner kit
Plenty of 5 gallon refillable jugs
An outlet timer
PH tester
PH up and down

If you plan on ever going big with the growing, i would save up now and dont waste your time and money with shitty equipment that will quickly become obsolete with you.

I recommend checking out tokecity forums they are very educated with growing and theres lots of grow journals. Your local hydro store can help you too.

Probably the best book available. Don't skimp on lights, nutrients or seedstock. The single plant grow room isn't going to happen though. Genetics today are incredible and you could go with some autoflowering strains so you don't need two rooms. Read up and have fun with it. Patience is the key

I agree to go onto Cannabis forums like ICmag, Planet Skunk or Ozstoners(Personally rollitup is alright, but full of kids that talk shit) and just continue to read and ask questions if needed. This is the quickest way you'll start learning how to grow.

And as Sub said, try not to purchase to much before you learn what your doing.

If just 1 plant, go for female seed's to make sure you end up with just that and not a male. Only females grow smokeable buds.

You can start by finding out dimensions of the box/cupboard your planning on using then figure out your lighting situation. You can also paint this inside of the box flat white to act as reflection for once you get things going.

Go for a simple soil medium. I would try and use a soil that is fertless, and add in some grandular fertilizers high in Nitrogen along with perlite for drainage for a simple but effective growing medium.
 
how involved are you tryin to get? You can grow decent buds for yourself with just a bit of general knowledge and a good simple growing plan. Look into soilless mediums (vermiculite, perlite).

I personally am growing in organic soil, but I don't think it is the easiest.. It's like a hobby for me as well as a way to smoke.

400w isnt really considered expensive ass crap when it comes to this subject, if you grow you know it can get infinitely more expensive. And i did tell him about the options of floro if OP is considering budget.

When it comes to this topic, you get what you pay for in yield and quality.
 
You can grow more than enough for personal use in a micro using cfls and a 70-150w hps/mh. When thinking of cost you can't just consider the initial purchasing price. The cost of electricity both for the lights and for any additional cooling/venting is also important to remember.
