First time poster, long time lurker here. I'm not sure if this is against the rules or not but here's hoping it's not as I could really use some advice.

I am currently seeing a psychotherapist for generalized anxiety and depression, after several sessions I now have a letter to my doctor with a list of my symptoms.

I was recently given some Valium and Xanax from a friend. The Valium relieved me of my symptoms like I could not believe, strangely enough I didn't like the Xanax as much, possibly due to the shorter half-life.

I have an appointment with my Dr. soon and I would like to get prescribed Valium, however I have read many times that asking for a specific drug by name will get a drug seeker mark next to my name. I also don't know if I should mention that I've had it before, as the whole "Obtaining prescription drugs from non-medical sources" is something that doctors frown upon.

There are a couple of other factors which are relevant:
First one being that I am currently prescribed Baclofen for alcohol dependence related headaches and have been trying, with the help of my doctor and counseling, to stop my alcohol consumption. I understand that doctors are reluctant to prescribe benzo's to those with a history of alcohol abuse. Adding to this, my Dr. did give me a one-off script of Temazepam for alcohol (or lack thereof) related insomnia. I didn't ask for a repeat, but it gives me the impression that he trusts me.

Secondly, my Dr. wants me to go on anti-depressants. I don't want to. I have a script that I haven't filled for Desvenlafaxine, I am worried that in light of my letter, he will insist that I take them.

I must note that I am under no illusion as to the dangers of benzo addiction, and despite my moniker (which I was amazed was still available), I am quite responsible, but who doesn't love the occasional opiate indulgence :)

Um.. Am I over thinking this, or am I right to worry. Is there anything I should do, or should I do what I normally do, given my current mental state, and be as passive as usual and just accept whatever my Dr. says?

I'm not trying to deceive my doctor at all.

I am of the opinion that my mental illness could be helped greatly with this drug, but because of the fact that there are a lot of drug seekers out there, I don't want to be labeled one myself.

You suggested saying that I've tried Valium, that was part of my question, so thanks :)

Whether or not you think you're doctor shopping or not, this type of discussion and advice really isn't allowed. Please PM a mod if you want to discuss this further.

Sorry hoptis, I just re-opened this thread for a second to add a reply :)

Edit:

Hi opi8,

If the Dr you're talking about is a GP I highly recommend you discuss the matter further with him before taking the Pristiq and see if he can refer you to a psychiatrist (possibly under a medicare mental health plan which will save you $$). I've been through similar situations with anxiety, depression & alcohol abuse and while a GP can write you scripts for anti-depressants you really need to use them as an adjunct to other therapy like CBT.
