After Strattera
about 4 years ago i stopped taking strattera, i have adhd but i found that when i took it, it made me very tired and unmotivated. I did fine in school with out it, but now that i am going into university i have a lot more work and would like to get some again. It seems that it is common for doctors to perscibe ritalin before adderall probably because adderall is an amphetamine and over a stronger drug. I have tried all the different types of add medicines and have found that adderal was the best one for me. So if i go in an ask for an adderall script specifically is the doctor just going to think that i want to get high, or would that be alright to do. I would really like to have some add meds to help me out, im honestly not even looking to get high off of them, but i dont want to just end up with ritalin, i only want adderall or vyvanse or another amphetamine base. So do you think hes just going to turn me down if i just straight ask for adderrall or should taht be ok?
After many years in a $100,000/yr. job, I had to leave because of severe attention problems. The State took my license to practice until I got a psychiatric eval for ADD/ADHD. I actually knew I'd had it since childhood, but selfmedicated for many years and did real well. Dr. diagnosed severe ADD and prescribed Strattera. I knew it was the fave "non-narcotic". I didn't like it, it caused impotence. I went back thinking he'd Rx Adderall. He tried to get me to stick with the Strattera but I told him after just a month, I couldn't function with my girlfriend and wanted to try something stronger anyway to "get my concentration where it needs to be" and that stuff wasn't working. Hoping for Adderral, he said that the "side effects would wear off, keep using it." (I wasn't ready for that response, now I'd have that damned Strat again). I stood my ground and said that I had worked hard to see if that stuff improved my concentration, regardless of the side effects I couldn't live with. I argued it hadn't worked and I'd prefer something stronger without the side effects. He relented but prescribed Ritalin, warning me of the amphetimine effect. After a month, I'll go back for the Adderall.
So, I think you're right that many want Ritalin as an interim step. But, I think you're in better shape to argue your case. I got upgraded from Strat to Ritalin after only 2 weeks.
You've had a much longer, documented experience with the Strat, so you may be able to argue that "look, I've tried this stuff for a long time, an absolute failure on improving my concentration and has side effects that's impairing my quality of life. Tell him what they are, and make sure the med you're asking for doesn't have the same side effects you're complaining about--generally some are the same for all 3 but complain only about the ones that you know Strattera and Ritalin have that Adderall doesn't. (if you can) They're all listed on the internet, so do your research and make sure you're a match for Adderall. I thought Ritalin was for kids so I only researched Strat vs. Adderall. If I'd have known, I'd have been prepared to lay out the case that Adderall is the only option. Key is to make it think based on your comments that the Dr. decides on his own to Rx it. But, always do like I do, once you've laid out the case, just simply say that you've had a few years experience with the other drug and that you'd like to try Adderall for 30 days.
That way, you've laid it out for the Dr. with reasons why he can Rx the Adderall. You didn't just go stampeding to the result you want. He won't think you're shopping for Adderall, otherwise you'd have asked in the beginning and not explained why the old drug doesn't work. You've given him reasons he can use in your file for Rx'ing it, at least to see how you do for 30 days. After 30 days, tell hime its working great and get it renewed (assuming you don't scarf them down in 10 days--but that's up to you.)
If you're final plea doesn't work and he hits you with Ritalin, tell him you'll like to report back in 30 days about how the Ritalin works. (I'd go back in 2 weeks and say its crap and tell him that the Ritalin didn't do a damn thing except improve your frisbee game ( I actually, use pot and acid for that, but that's just me).
But your class room concentration still sucks. He may make you wait 2 more weeks or not, either way you should so be trade up to Adderall.
So, give it the best shot as described or you see fit, hope this helps. Even if you have to settle for the Ritalin, just make sure you cooperate politely by telling him him you'll give it 30 days. Persuasion works better than demand (unless you're armed).
