so heres the story- right out of high school i moved out, got into an electrical apprenticeship program and was working 40-80hr weeks doing commercial electric. it was alright, i didnt mind the work- tho the hours sucked(waking up at 4 am.. eh..) but it paid pretty good and had full health, dental, and a retirement plan. anyways, after doing that for a little over a year, and always being by far the youngest guy on the job site(18 at the time) and hearing from everyone that i should go to school, that i was throwing my life away when i could be getting a degree. anyways, alot of it made sense so i applied to a couple schools and got into a decent private university. and yup, hated it just as much as high school, only i was paying my prof's salary. by myself, with very little loans. racked almost 10gs in loans at the end of the semester and spent nearly 5gs of my savings. granted, i was having fun and unemployed, but i decided itd be cheaper to go to a community college for 2 yrs. made it 2 weeks and havent went back.

anyways, its been almost 2 year since i quit my electrical job and i cant exactly explain to potential employers how i've been supporting myself or what i've been doing since i quit going to school(mostly smoking, drinking and playing music). im trying to pull myself out of this hole i've dug and get back into electrical but i have no idea how to explain my employment gap. is my best option to re enroll in school and just say that i've been attending school, but havent earned a degree yet- but that im planning on dropping out once i get a full time job because i need the money? i've only had 2 jobs and only had an interview for 1 of them. i've had a few interviews in my search, but i feel like most over look my resume because i have such a huge employment gap.

i dont currently have health insurance any my wisdom teeth are starting to cause pain/crowding. what other trades/programs offer health/dental that i can get into with only a highschool diploma? im fairly mechanically inclined and dont mind a hard day. i realize college may be the best investment, but it just isnt for me.

I've had periods of unemployment and have been in similar situations. The best advice I can give is to start lowering your standards regarding the jobs you're applying for. You can prolly get a low paying job doing retail or something, then after you've been working there a few months start looking for better paying jobs. The good paying employers don't like hiring unemployed people, but the lower paying ones don't mind. Just keep telling yourself it's only temporary.

I worked some really shitty jobs after periods of unemployment and finally landed a good gig, so it can be done.

Good luck.

Two years is a long time. You could say that you travelled overseas for part of that time. You could probably explain up to a year with overseas travel. You could also maybe say that you tried to start your own business but what with the economic climate it didn't work out?
