Ok... here's my situation. About 6 months ago I went to my psychiatrist about depression/anxiety, and he prescribed me Zoloft. It helped the depression but I still had quite a bit of anxiety, which I told him about the last time I had an appt. I was hoping he would prescribe me a benzo (like Xanax, etc) to help my anxiety, but he simply upped my dosage of Zoloft. I was tempted to just ask him about it, but I didn't want him to think I was just trying to get a prescription out of him. Well, he upped my dosage of Zoloft, which didn't do much except create more side effects. I have my next appointment this week, and I want him to put me back on my lowered dosage of Zoloft and give me something good for my anxiety. Problem is, I don't think he readily gives out prescriptions for Xanax, Klonopin, etc... unless the patient gives a good reason. (It seems my anxiety and inability to get to sleep at night isn't enough for him... Or he thinks Zoloft is the magic fuckin' cure-all for everything, which it isn't...) Any suggestions on what I should tell him?

Firstly, some doctors flat out will not work with benzos and many others will only as a last resort. Your doctor might be like that. Also, if the doctor knows of any past alcohol or drug use/abuse, they will be very reluctant to send benzos your way.
Just keep maintaining that the Zoloft is doing nothing. Also complain of panic attacks on top of your normal anxiety. Tell him that when they hit, that you feel as if you are either going to lose your mind or die. Tell your doc it is hard to breath, your heart races, and you cannot concentrate or remember things. Tell him/her that it is really effecting your work and family life.
Shit like this can take some time for the doctor to come around. If you really feel they won't help you out, I would suggest finding a new doctor that will.

you can say that the zoloft is working well, but you still have a little nervousness on them still. If he wants to up the dosage take it, but don't eat them for a month and say the same. hope this helps.

Tell him you couldn't take the increased side effects so you knocked the dose back down (of course you gave the higher dose the proper 2-weeks so your body could adjust) ... make the point that the low dose of Zoloft did good, however, anxeity was a problem ... you can flat out ask for a low dose of Klonopin (you wont get Xanax)- perhaps relate a story of having previously been on this combo, or if it comes down to it, relate a story about your mother giving you some f her .5mg Klonopin ... in the end, he might be a doctor thats not going to work with you, and you may just have to move on...
