Would it be beneficial to take GABA supplements during benzo withdrawls to help with symtoms and recovery since GABA is directly associated with withdrawls.

Or is it opposite and harmful to take GABA during withdrawls or dependency or rather no effects on recovery?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum didnt know where to put it.

^It doesn't penetrate the Blood-Brain Barrier very efficently, so its not much use. In fact, I've foudnt hat high doses actually bring on a lot of benzo w/d symptoms; parathesia, hard to breathe, panicky feelings.

The best thing to do is just wait.

I feel ya, I'm in pretty fucken bad w/d now, feeling utterly horrrible. Theres really no solution but time...:\

Take care :)

I actually found the opposite... my bodily is heavily dependent on benzodiazepines (copious amounts of prescribed Halcion, Xanax, Klonopin, Restoril, Serax, Valium, Ativan and overseas Phenazepam). So what happens? A real "friend" of mine makes off with half of my month's prescription. Sporadic alcohol use (1-2 beers) and a daily regiment of 1500 mg GABA (2x750mg dietary supplement pills gammabutyric acid) has kept the twitching and other seizure-like W/D effects largely at bay (though not entirely, I will admit).

It certainly can't hurt, is my thought

Well, you have peripheral GABA receptors too, and much of anxiety is somatic auto-perception, so it might help.

^ I know a lot about neurology, but I'd still like to request a clarification regarding what you mean by this

I took one 750mg GABA pill and when I went to bed, my muscles were totally relaxed. Now this is not scientific evidence whatsoever, it may be placebo.

Hi there,

I can't speak about if it could help benzo withdrawal, but regarding crossing the blood brain barrier; someone please correct this if it's wrong, but I think there's a certain form of GABA called "Pharma GABA", which is supposed to be active/cross the barrier.

I've seen it in an anti anxiety formula sold in health food stores; and online, of course. You might want to read up on it...?

Good luck!

Well the only form of GABA I know of which crosses the BBB is Phenibut, which is GABA with an added phenyl ring. It works well but do not take it everyday and take it only in small doses of 500 to 1 gram a day, or else you will be addicted and the withdrawal of Phenibut can be a nightmare.

Yes, Phenibut is *much* more effective than GABA supplements, that's for damn sure!

Lyrica (Pregabalin) is the only drug that has worked BETTER for me than any benzo (for anxiety and panic attacks).. GABA supplements just make me drowsy

Oh. What I meant is that even if GABA fails to cross the BBB, it could still exert anxiolysis by acting on receptors in the non-brain body. Much of the lived experience of anxiety appears to be rooted in our perception of our body, ie muscle tension, rapid pulse, high BP, etc. So insofar as such bodily experiences are inhibited via peripheral GABA activity, peripheral GABA agonists should reduce anxiety.

I wouldn't call this a "form of GABA", as it acts as a GABA-B selective agonist (with some GABA activity), not like GABA itself.

This makes sense, as IIRC, Lyrica works through gapapentin-like activity, not GABA-agonism.
